We’re thrilled to share that Somerville Media Center has received an FY27 Creative Experiences grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council!
This funding will help us expand SMC’s Women in Film series, creating a free, accessible pathway for women in Somerville and the greater Boston area to learn filmmaking, develop their creative voices, and take their place behind the camera.
Launched in March 2026, our Women in Film program began with workshops exploring women’s history in cinema, media literacy, and the stories that can be lost when women are excluded from authorship.
With support from this grant, we’ll take the program into its next phase: a 12-week, hands-on filmmaking cohort covering camera, sound, editing, and storytelling, alongside monthly discussions that encourage critical engagement and creative development.
Participants will create their own short films and celebrate their work at a public community screening. Grant funding helps us keep the program free and accessible by supporting instruction, an accessible venue, and accessibility services.
We’re proud to invest in building a lasting pipeline of women filmmakers in our community and grateful to the Massachusetts Cultural Council for supporting the creative voices that deserve to be heard.
Thank you, Mass Cultural Council for investing in Somerville’s creative community!
