To a Rock n Roll Ghost…
First accordion trip yesterday. Lovely instrument.
This was a great setup. Coles 4038 near, RCA-77DX distance...both into cloud lifters...and a Neumann m-147 behind the guitar and aimed at the body. For vocals we used an RE-20 into a VoxBox...offset so the singer wasn't going directly into it. So we didn't need an pop-filter or de-essing. The RE-20 was perfect for a non-direct address. An amazing, versatile, inexpensive mic.
25 days ago David and I went into his Bluetone Studios in Somerville, MA to record a few tracks and film the session for posterity while maintaining a safe social distance. Clayton is currently editi
I documented the safe studio process we've been using at Bluetone for the last few weeks. Essentially involves defining Artist Space and Engineer Space to maintain social distance. It also covers how to manage surfaces and equipment -- mic quarantining, for instance.
Posting for anyone interested in how safe recording can be done. Also if anyone has ideas or solutions that have worked for them, I'd love to talk!

Falling for the mid-side stereo miking. Requires almost no phase correction and is ideal for a single instrument. Not super wide but much easier than AB or XY. Dennis doing some smooth brushwork helped too...
Studio Rat Confessional. I think I may love an aesthetically beautiful setup more than I like the actual music. Is that wrong?
Every once in a while I still get to shred...
We hosted a freelance video shoot earlier this year for an Eldridge Rodriguez single. It’s on Big Takeover Magazine now.
Dear Friends and Enemies, Big Takeover Magazine has premiered the video for Eldridge Rodriguez's "Your Dead Boyfriend." Featuring Sarah Borges

The first record I produced entirely at bluetone. One or two more and I’ll peak I swear.

It’s too early into 2020 to declare a record one of the best of the year, yeah? Well, if it’s not uncouth to do so then I’d like to submit the long awaited new full-length from Bo…
Odd...it took four hours to take down the old setup and a mere 6 weeks later the control room is mostly operational again. At least the Focals are back on line anyway.
Gonna look super, studio.
Tisket came back with a thousand other heroes we needed from My Bloody Valentine to General Hospital. But these guys are gonna make me really happy until the dead tech gentrification machine rolls though here.

Started basic tracks for the new ER record with the new Martin. I cropped the first 9 minutes of the song where he just kinda goes on like that for 15 or 20 minutes.
Dueling 70s Memory Mens. Big as toasters, fuzzy as teddy bears.
We had The Daylilies in this weekend with the unflappable Mike Quinn at the controls for a 9 song sprint.
Got our Fully Executed Lease today. Looks like we’re back for another 4 seasons.
The Beatings surveillance cam. Lotta chatter about a “New Destroyer”...
Recommend we put a drone over professor green there.

Pre-production sessions with Mr. Airplane Man.
Margaret catching stars in the booth earlier tonight.
Reamping tracks for that big Eldridge Rodriguez guitar sound.
4th of July “cookout” with Margaret of Mr. Airplane Man — listening to masters for her new solo project. Lotsa hypnotic guitar loops and chilled, reverby vox. And topanga canyon bird samples. Not sure when she’s releasing but it’s gonna be good.
Final touch on the “dream strip” — A Neve tape emulator with their soulmelting Silk circuit.
API pre - of course
ELI DerrEsser - set for a slick harmonic trick for bass
Chandler EQ and Compressor - so many controls you need a magnifying glass to use them.
IC Little Brute Opto Limiter - despite the unfortunate name is kind and clean and gives a f**kton of late stage gain to the strip.
Clack!
Red hot sax tracking this week with Joe from the Downtown Boys for the ER record. Coles 4038 into the API channel strip sounded great. And the kid can blow...so that helped.
Old friend, Joe DeGeorge of Downtown Boys was nice enough to come into Bluetone Studio last night and blow his horn on the new record. Fun night.
A rare shot of the live room, pre-session thanks to Ajda Snyder
A few shots from Ajda Snyder's and Mike Quinn's marathonical session here at the end of april. Fun times had by all.
