Have you ever wondered what happens when lightning strikes a remote area? This summer we were fortunate enough to find out.

While trying to escape the smoke in Lake Tahoe, we set out on a multi-day backpacking trip into the Marble Mountain Wilderness. After a grueling hike, a severe thunderstorm broke out igniting the hill behind our camp. In a panic we thought it would be best to pack up camp and evacuate the area.

Just as we were about to hike out, a helicopter flew over the lake and dumped 3 buckets of water on the blaze before flying to another burn site. We watched the area patiently, hoping that the flames were extinguished when suddenly one of the trees lit up to the very top. That's when we knew it was time to go.

As we threw our packs on, a plane flew over and we could see parachutes floating through the sky. We didn't know what to do, or if there were more fires blocking the trail that led back to the vehicles. Before we could decide on whether to stay near water or try to escape, a firefighter came stumbling out of the woods behind camp. His name was Matt. He assured us that they would have the fire out in a couple of days and we could set up camp and continue our trip. Soon after, 3 more men emerged from the woods and proceeded to walk straight up the mountain to fight the fire.

Over the course of the next four days, they worked through the night with limited rations and even asked to borrow our water filter to refill their jugs. By the time we left the fire was out and our favorite backpacking spot was saved!

California has been plagued by wildfire for as long as we can remember, but year after year the fires are contained. We want to give a huge shout out and our utmost gratitude to all the brave men and women who protect our home. Although most of us don't get to see all of your hard work, know that we all appreciate it.

You guys are the epitome of the word RAD!
