This week on the Big Show, live in the studio will be several musicians that are all participating in the Sonoma Palooza event on Dec. 10 at the Sebastiani Theatre, including Jenni Purcell, John Arntz and more. The event is the brainchild of local Robyn Johnson as an event for her birthday to benefit La Luz Center. You have likely seen Robyn at a number of local music venues, behind the bar for years at the Sonoma Speakeasy and most recently, the manager of the Parkside Tasting Bar on the Plaza where she is bringing jazz to the room. Tune into the show live on KSVY on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. to catch is live, or stream it or download the app. Or, catch the pod and videocast later. The full press release is below:
"On December 10 at 7:30pm, nearly 30 of the North Bay’s most talented musicians will gather to celebrate, support and create a truly unique musical experience at the historic Sebastiani Theatre in downtown Sonoma. The SonomaPalooza “mini festival” is a fundraiser for La Luz Center Sonoma, who provide vital services and support to the local Hispanic community during these challenging times. The show is inspired by the birthday of Sonoma local music supporter, Robyn Johnson (Parkside Wine Bar).
Michael Israel brings his mega-talented group, The Blender to the stage with special guests, including guitarist David Aguilar (Big Brother and the Holding Company). These artists will be “blending” with the virtuosic Sonoma String Collective to produce many unique arrangements of some of the band’s favorite tunes, plus a few 90’s alternative tunes. Micheal comments: “We’re all incredibly excited about the evening’s music. I’ve paired up artists from my many ventures into some incredibly exciting matches. This will be next level stuff for everyone involved!”
John Arntz (Strange Daze, Chartreuse Effect, Live Band Karaoke) brings a group of musicians assembled from his many projects to the show. John and Andy Ting of the Sonoma String Collective worked together to feature strings on special arrangements of songs, again featuring ‘90s alternative rock hits mixed in with other favorites. “The magic of this evening will be the blurring of boundaries between bands and between musicians. There will be multiple opportunities for guest singers and musicians to join other bands during the evening, and some of the tunes being performed will have interesting and unusual interpretations” – John Arntz.
Regarding the unique nature of the show, Sonoma String Collective’s Andy Ting remarks: “We are so excited to play SonomaPalooza! As classically trained musicians, we don’t often get the opportunity to rock out, but myself and my quartet members, Samual Strong, Miranda Ronan, and Anuja Dave are thrilled to collaborate with the great bands of Sonoma! It would not have been possible without our wonderful arranger/composer Colin Hathorn”.
Several guest artists, all stars in their own right, will be featured throughout the show. Guest artists Include Jenni Purcell (Ravendaisy), Sue Albano (Scarlett Letters, Groove Incident), Sharyn Paquette (Bayou Moon, Sonoma Sound Syndicate), Violet Lux (violetlux_), Will Cotter (Illegitimate AC/DC, Scarlett Letters) and Max Schimm (Strange Daze). Featured artist Jenni Purcell: “We’re all thrilled to bring something special to the night. The chance to mix in with so many great performers is wonderful! I am looking forward to a night full of surprises, passionate performances and the love of our great local music scene.”
Tickets for the show are available for a modest $25 (plus $3 service fee) at www.Sebastianitheatre.org
