In 1929, South Bend was booming, and its beautiful new $1 million Union Station was proof!

But the station was just part of a much bigger vision for the city’s future. From massive railroad construction to grand plans that never happened, this is one incredible piece of South Bend history!

The Colfax Theater

213 W. Colfax Ave.

Opened in 1928, this beautiful theater seated nearly 2,000 people and even hosted Hollywood stars! It closed in 1977 and was demolished in 1991.

This one is hard to imagine…. Wow 😮

But I’m standing with the Century Center at my back looking west down Washington NOW and THEN (1960’s) when Washington pretty much dead ended into the river.

Zoom in and you can see the present day Cafe Navarre (originally American Trust) and the JMS buildings to the right - only buildings still standing.

Mishawaka Ave Grand Trunk viaduct NOW and THEN when it was under construction in the late 1920s.

Hard to imagine the disruption as crews elevated the railroad tracks and built these enormous concrete structures across the city from Twyckenham to Chapin.

Nearly 100 years later, we’re still driving underneath them.

NOW & THEN: Main and Jefferson, downtown South Bend……

The beautiful old South Bend Post Office, built in 1898, was demolished in 1931 to make way for a new Art Deco post office that opened in 1933.

Designed by the same local architectural firm behind the Tower Building and I&M Building, it served as a post office until 1973 when the present day post office was built.

Today, it’s the Robert A. Grant Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse.
