𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠 π—”π—Ÿπ—˜π—₯𝗧 | Don't scammers have anything better to do? Well, apparently not. πŸ™„

Heads up, South Bend... we are seeing an uptick in reports of people who have been contacted by "police officers," demanding folks pay money to make their "warrants" or "court cases" go away.

These scammers prey on emotions β€” imagine how intimidating that type of call could be! Many times, victims tell us that they panic and send over money before considering whether the call was legitimate.

To make matters worse, scammers are searching our website and social media pages to find names of actual officers who work here in an effort to legitimize their story.

If you receive a call like this and don't feel comfortable hanging up right away, follow these steps:

1️⃣ Take a deep breath. The scammer may have said things to scare you or intimidate you... but keeping your cool can help keep a clear mind.

2️⃣ Do 𝗑𝗒𝗧 make arrangements to pay the caller. Real officers will never contact you to "pay your way" out of a crime or missed court date. You should especially be wary if the caller mentions gift cards, crypto or a wire transfer service.

3️⃣Never share any personal information with the caller.

4️⃣ After telling the caller that you aren't falling for his/her scheme... contact your local law enforcement agency right away. Relay as many details as you can remember (names, numbers, etc.)

5️⃣ If you 𝗗𝗒 fall for a scam and send money... do not be embarrassed. Call police right away and report what happened. You may feel ashamed... but please remember these scammers can be quite good at what they do... and they have tricked many, many others.

Help us spread the word on this! We don't want to see any more of our neighbors send money to these scammers!
