HOOSIER BALLOT BREAKDOWN: Candidate Interview

Mary Allen – U.S. House District 8

What’s really at stake in this race?

In our latest Hoosier Ballot Breakdown, Mary Allen says the 2026 election comes down to a clear choice: a representative who “acts as a rubber stamp” for Washington politics, or one who fights directly for the people of Indiana’s 8th District.

Allen, a city councilor, small business owner, and Army Reserve veteran, says she was motivated to run out of frustration with leadership she believes has failed to stand up for working families—especially as costs rise and rural healthcare access declines.

She identifies the cost of living as the most urgent issue facing Hoosiers, arguing that families are being squeezed by both corporate practices and government inaction.

If elected, Allen says her first priorities would include:
• Supporting a ban on congressional stock trading
• Fighting to improve rural healthcare funding
• Putting “kitchen table issues” ahead of party politics

Allen also emphasizes independence, stating she would support or oppose legislation based on how it impacts everyday Hoosiers—not party leadership.

She acknowledges concerns about running as a Democrat in a Republican-leaning district but urges voters to look at her record and focus on who will fight for their jobs, healthcare, and financial stability.

Her message to voters: your vote is your voice—and this race is about representation that answers to the people, not political insiders.

🇺🇸 New Move from Washington: Trump Orders Signature on All U.S. Bills

The Donald Trump administration has directed the U.S. Department of the Treasury to begin adding the president’s signature to all newly printed U.S. currency.

💵 What this means:

The Treasury Secretary’s signature has traditionally appeared on U.S. bills

This move adds the president’s name into the design going forward

It marks a notable shift in how U.S. currency is presented

⚖️ Bottom line: This isn’t just about money — it’s about symbolism, tradition, and how far presidential influence should go.

⚡ Indiana Utility Bills Surge — Regulators Seek Answers

Hoosiers are feeling the pinch as electric bills in Indiana continue to rise. State energy regulators are now investigating the sharp increases, asking utility companies to explain the higher costs and what steps they’re taking to ease the burden on customers.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) is reviewing rates and looking for solutions that could help families and businesses manage their energy expenses. With winter months behind us, many residents are still grappling with surprisingly high bills.

🔍 Regulators say solutions could include better transparency from utility companies, improved billing practices, or longer-term energy cost management strategies — but no immediate fixes have been announced.

📊 As energy prices climb nationwide, Indiana residents are closely watching to see what relief measures regulators might implement.

💬 Are your electric bills higher than expected? What solutions would you like to see from the state and your utility provider?

🚨 “No Kings” Protests Set for March 28 — 64 Planned Across Indiana

A massive nationwide protest is coming this Saturday.

Organizers say over 3,000 “No Kings” events are planned across the country — making it one of the largest coordinated protests in the U.S. this year.
In Indiana, there are 64 protests scheduled statewide, including major gatherings in:

📍 Indianapolis – State House (12 PM)
📍 Fort Wayne – Allen County Court Administration (2 PM)
📍 Evansville – Four Freeman Monument (2 PM)
📍 South Bend – Jon Hunt Memorial Plaza (1 PM)
📍 Bloomington – Courthouse Square (1 PM)
📍 Lafayette – Civic Plaza (1 PM)

Organizers say the protests are peaceful and focused on defending democracy and pushing back against what they call growing government overreach.

📌 This is the third “No Kings” protest, and it’s expected to be the biggest yet.

💬 Will you be attending one — or what do you think about these protests?

🚨 Gov. Mike Braun Signals Shift on Cannabis

Over the weekend, Mike Braun publicly signaled a noticeable change in tone on cannabis policy in Indiana.

For years, Braun has taken a cautious approach — supporting only limited medical use while opposing broader legalization. But now, he says the state can’t ignore reality anymore.
With Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky all moving forward with some form of legalization, Braun admitted Indiana will likely have to address its own cannabis laws.

He even described himself as “kind of agnostic” on the issue — a significant shift from his previous stance.

That’s a big deal.

It doesn’t mean legalization is coming tomorrow. But it does mean the conversation is changing at the highest level of state government.

🌱 Whether this turns into real policy — or stays just talk — will depend on what happens next at the Statehouse.

👉 Do you think Indiana is finally ready to move on cannabis?
