Michigan is home to seven of America’s largest trees. Known as national champions, these towering trees range from 79 feet to 119 feet tall.

The National Champion Tree Program, which began in 1940, recognizes just one tree from each species across the United States. Michigan’s champions are spread across the Upper and Lower peninsulas and include species of oak, ash, Aspen and pine.

April 1949 The gray morning mist rolled over Lake Michigan as Edward “Eddie” Novak, a 45-year-old Polish-American lighthouse keeper, climbed the narrow stairs of the South Haven Light in Michigan. He’d been tending the light for nearly twenty years, guiding ships through fog and storm.

That spring, a fishing vessel struck a sandbar during a sudden squall. Eddie spotted the distress flare and braved the icy surf in a small rowboat, rowing through waves until he reached the men. One by one, he hauled them aboard, soaked and shivering, before returning to shore.

Later, when reporters asked why he risked his life, Eddie shrugged: “That’s what the light’s for — to bring ’em home.”
