Lawyers Express Support for Protesters Ahead of Protest

Accra, Ghana - September 20, 2024 – As preparations continue for the protest set to commence tomorrow, September 21, 2024, Democracy Hub is pleased to announce that a group of independent legal professionals who provided support during last year's FixTheCountry protests have once again stepped forward to offer their services to participants of this demonstration.

These lawyers have expressed their readiness to provide pro bono legal assistance to protesters, safeguarding their rights in the face of potential legal challenges and any incidents of unlawful arrest or mistreatment.

This offer of legal support follows recent developments surrounding the protest. According to the lawyers

"In view of the ongoing disagreements between the Conveners and the Police, and considering the history of police brutality and human rights violations during peaceful protests in Ghana, the group of lawyers stands ready to offer legal representation and advice to any participant in need."

Democracy Hub appreciates the dedication of these legal professionals to ensuring the protection of constitutional rights and urges the Police to uphold their commitment to maintaining peace and safety during the protest.

For further information or to volunteer, kindly contact:

Senior Lawyer Justice Srem-Sai (Justice Sai)

Lawyer Prince Ganaku ()

Lawyers interested in joining the legal support team are encouraged to reach out for more details on how to get involved.

Signed,

Democracy Hub

OLIVER ALERT: UPDATE NO. 24.

The Attorney-General has yet again failed to cause a summons and other particulars on the docket to be served on Oliver Barker-Vormawor or his lawyers. The summons and the particulars are needed for Oliver’s trial to start.

It may be recalled that on 1st August, 2022, the Ashaiman District Magistrate Court committed Oliver to stand trial on two counts of treason felony. By the Magistrate’s orders, the trial was to start on 1st September, 2022.

On 1st September, 2022, the Attorney-General, without serving the summons or the particulars on Oliver or his lawyers, went to the High Court (Criminal Division 3), Accra, to start prosecution on Oliver’s blindside.

On that day, according to media reports the High Court judge, Her Ladyship, Justice Mary Yanzuh, adjourned the case to 13th October, 2022, and ordered the Attorney-General to cause the summons and the particulars to be served on Oliver.

On 27th September, 2022, Oliver’s lawyers wrote a letter to the Attorney-General and made a formal demand on him for the service of the summons and the particulars (see the receipt copy of the letter attached).

Mr. Victor Owusu, as quoted in the 11th July 1968 Daily Graphic, argued that the NLC government had unlimited powers and was “more powerful than the colonial government and even the Government of independent Ghana and its Parliament”.
