The Supreme Court judgement delivered on 11th July 2024 grant financial autonomy to local government in Nigeria.

This means that FAAC allocation will now be sent by the federal government direct to the local government account, rather than the previous arrangement where by the state government are given the money and they share to the local government, allegedly deducting some percentage.

The issue of local government financial autonomy has long been a national issue and debate.
Many government administration has come and gone with a promise to grant local government financial autonomy but none of the past presidents has done that.

But President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, (T-pain) summoned the courage not minding the fight back he may get from the governors.

Local government chairmen should by this efforts of the President be able to initiate well meaning projects in their communities, rather than the usual grading of roads the previous council chairmen are known for, with excuses they received very little from the governor.

Any local government chairman who have no tangible projects, like construction of schools and equipment, procurement of basic healthcare materials for primary health centres, provision of pipe borne waters, meaningful agricultural empowerment, youth and women empower, amounts to sabotage of the efforts of the president to ensure leadership gets to the grassroots.

So therefore, what project or projects have you seen in your village or villages and is it a local government initiated project or projects?

Oya look at the allocations received by the local government chairmen and compel with the quality of the work be done in your community by the local government chairman.

Let’s together promote good governance, accountability and transparency for a developed community.

In our continued commitment in pursuing accountability, transparency and good goverance, we also have written to ministry of innovation, science and technology and SME center Enugu, requesting for the data of the real beneficiaries of the N4.6 billion grants disbursed by the Enugu state government to both farmers and IT startups in the state on August 2024.

The motives of our group is to conduct a survey to assess the impact and challenges faced by the beneficiaries in tech startups and in small and medium scale enterprise.

SEDAG holds the current administration at a very high esteem and great regards for the government following her giant strides and good intentions towards achieving a robust economy.

SEDAG maintains that government injecting 4.6 billion last year to boost the agricultural and the tech/IT sector is enough to ensure food security, price stability and technological advancement.

It will be a great disservice to the state and economic sabotage from the part of the beneficiaries if the money are not put to good use and for the purpose for which the government release the fund.

To this end SEDAG a civil society organization with the sole aim of promoting Good Governance, Accountability and transparency in fiscal expenditures, expresses interest in conducting a follow-up survey in the August 2024 N4.6 billion naira agricultural and MSMEs support and grants by the Enugu state Government.

As a group we seek for the support of the general public and the cooperation of the state government to enable us conduct a successful survey and recommendations for policy formation for future purposes.

Our findings will be made public to medias and organizations from time to time, as we receive the data from the implementing ministries and government agencies.

SEDAG COMMENDS ENUGU STATE GOVERNOR FOR HIS GIGANTIC SUPPORTS TO AGRICULTURE AND MSME IN THE STATE

Socia-EconomicDevelopment and Accountable governance (SEDAG) a civil society group congratulates the Enugu state Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, on the recent empowerment of 4.6 billionaire worth of agricultural inputs and MSMEs grants to farmers, communities, and IT startups across the 17 local government areas of the state.

The statement was made by the group Executive Director during an interview with a BAN reporter in Enugu.

SEDAG, pointed out that the action of the Governor is a good move and in the right direction, as the empowerment came in the time the youths took over the streets to protest against hardship, hashtagged , as a result of high cost of food items and essential goods price, which has thrown the entire nation into extreme poverty and hunger.

According to SEDAG, releasing and distributions of the funds is not always the problem but the funds reaching the target or real beneficiaries. The group stated that if the initiative and purpose to which the governor released the 4.6 billion naira is well implemented, the funds and farming tools given to the real beneficiaries will increase food production, job creations, and security enhancement; thereby boosting the state economy, which is the core purpose the government pumped the huge sum of money in the agricultural and micro business sector.

SEDAG also expressed interest in working with the government of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah in monitoring the movement of the funds to ensure the success of the initiative of the government in enhancing food security, agro-industrialization, and the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs) in the state.

SEDAG also assured the general public that it will make available every information regarding the monitoring of the fund and evaluation of the performance by the beneficiaries, for accountability and transparency, which is the core objective of the group.
