One of our favorite radio traditions is playing Arlo Guthrie’s classic long-form talkin’ blues Alice’s Restaurant Massacree in its entirety on Thanksgiving Day.

Arlo Guthrie, Woody Guthrie’s son, drew on the tradition of long-form monologues like Lord Buckley’s and laid it over Piedmont finger style guitar playing inspired by Mississippi John Hurt in particular.

The story of Guthrie and a friend being arrested for littering and then years later dodging the draft is mostly true, and the word “massacree,” while derived from the word “massacre,” is an Ozark Mountain colloquialism with much lighter and more sarcastic connotations. It means “an event so wildly and improbably messed up that the results are hard to believe.”

Join us for the yearly tradition at 1pm on Thanksgiving, right after the headlines.
