Beachgoers who set up chairs and umbrellas for a day of sun and fun at ocean beaches across the South Fork this summer will no doubt notice the collection of tanned, fit women in matching bright red bathing suits surrounding the tall white lifeguard chairs. On any given day, those women are hard at work, sitting side by side at the top of the chair, eyes trained on the water, occasionally leaping off, grabbing a rescue torp and diving into the waves to help swimmers in distress. They’re driving Jet Skis through rough surf, using the strength and stamina they’ve honed from countless hours of rigorous training to guide an exhausted swimmer back to shore through crashing waves, using upper body strength to pull a rescue landline back onto shore.

Seventeen years ago, the Amber Waves co-founders met for the first time, in spring 2008, as apprentices at Quail Hill Farm under the guidance of their mentor, Scott Chaskey. Both had enrolled in the yearlong apprenticeship as a means to a different kind of career end.

But then life had other plans.

Nearly two decades later, the duo have made the farm and the indoor market space — formerly the Amagansett Farmers Market — right off Montauk Highway in the heart of Amagansett a destination for both year-round and summer visitors

Westhampton Beach resident Mike Variale had a long and fulfilling career as a teacher, and then went on to create a successful entertainment business as a second act post-teaching, but also began a different second act, creating a new side job that’s more of a hobby, related to buying and selling sports cards and memorabilia.

By Cailin Riley Before he was a mega famous seven-time Super Bowl winning MVP quarterback, Tom Brady was just a kid who loved collecting baseball cards. Westhampton Beach resident Mike Variale had a long and fulfilling career as a teacher, and then w

If it wasn’t for seven founding mothers and their initiative to create a warm, welcoming, educational and fun space for families, the Children's Museum of the East End wouldn’t be here, today.

“Twenty years later, we’re still here,” Lara Sweeney, co-president of the museum, said. “Kids can come and learn through play.”

On Saturday, August 9, bibliophiles, beachgoers, and boldface names will gather under a grand tent in Herrick Park in the Village of East Hampton for the 21st annual Authors Night, a signature event hosted by the East Hampton Library.

Each summer, as East Hampton basks in its golden-hour glow, an altogether different kind of star-studded soirée graces the calendar — not of screen legends or socialites (though they may attend), but of storytellers. On Saturday, August 9, bibliophil

In her job as a fishery specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County , Kristin Gerbino works on many different projects aimed at boosting and supporting the greater local fish industry in and around Long Island. Much of what she does on a daily basis is education and research-based, and in that effort she works with a wide range of stakeholders in the commercial fishing industry and within state and local government.

At a certain point, Gerbino and her colleagues realized there was a key area where they could do more in terms of outreach and developing more inventive ways to help the local fishing industry survive and thrive, and encourage people to eat more local seafood.

That’s how the Long Island Seafood Cuisine Trail was born.

“Fill plates, not landfills.” That’s the mission of a network of volunteers tackling the dual challenges of food insecurity and environmental waste on the Twin Forks. Food Rescue US, a national organization with a pair of local chapters on eastern Long Island, collects surplus food from farms and businesses to distribute to those in need.

“It just makes people feel good to do something for your neighbor,” said Stephanie McEvily, Food Rescue US - North Fork North Fork site co-director.

The goal is to “fill plates, not landfills.” That’s the mission of Food Rescue US, which has with a pair of chapters on eastern Long Island.

"Naj II" by Kevin Barrett will be on view at Southampton Arts Center as part of "Organic Abstraction."

This summer, the East End landscape is getting a monumental makeover as Hamptons Sculpture Sights, the region’s premier outdoor sculpture exhibition series, introduces two compelling exhibitions spanning Bridgehampton and Southampton. Bridge Gardens, the beloved horticultural oasis managed by the Peconic Land Trust, welcomes “Uncommon Ground VI,” the sixth edition of a show that thrives on the interplay between the cultivated and the wild. Just a few miles away, the Southampton Arts Center hosts “Organic Abstraction: Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture,” now in its second season.

Some things just work well together. Think coffee and cream, peanut butter and jelly, chocolate chip cookies and milk. Think Ann Corley and Steve Amaral, the co-owners of North Fork Chocolate Company.

Though they’re not often found in the same place at the same time — Amaral primarily manages their Riverhead location, while Corley holds down their Mattituck spot — theirs is a partnership that thrives on complementary skills and interests. Amaral is the artistic genius behind many of the business’s recipes and products, while Corley is the marketing and retail guru who makes the business make sense.
