At the next meeting of the Southampton Village Planning Commission, set for Friday, October 17, at 3 p.m. at Southampton Village Hall, residents and community members at large who have an interest or stake in the issue of workforce housing in the village can be part of what promises to be a robust discussion about one of the most crucial issues in the area.

The commission will host a discussion on the issue, with input from several key leaders and experts on local housing. Kara Bak, Town of Southampton Housing and Community Services director, will be on hand along with Curtis Highsmith, executive director of the Southampton Town Housing Authority.

Jay Diesing, the advisor for the town’s Community Housing Fund, will also be present, along with Southampton Village Mayor Bill Manger and Southampton Village Trustees.

“As I was doing some research on this settlement in Montauk, Freetown kept coming up, and I was seeing these connections between families in Montauk and families in Freetown, and so I developed that for my dissertation,” Dr. Allison McGovern said. “After my dissertation was over, I continued to work on this research, and I was part of the community advisory group that helped to get the town to take over ownership of the Fowler House and make it a landmark.”

By Jack Motz While working on her dissertation about Montaukett settlements in 2015, Dr. Allison McGovern repeatedly saw connections between families in Montauk and those in Freetown. This insight launched her into the Mapping Memories of Freetown pr

“Years in the making, this investment marks a transformative moment for the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center,” says Julienne Penza-Boone, the theater’s executive director. “With these funds, we will be able to make long-term improvements that not only enhance the patron and artist experience but also elevate our capacity to bring in world-class talent to our stage.”

The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center has been awarded $4 million from Southampton Town’s Community Preservation Fund, providing funds to support the historic theater that will be used for “major capital projects and enhancements.” “Years in t

Enter the launch of the Jane Stanton Celebrating Women in Theatre Project, a new initiative — made possible by a recent anonymous grant from a private charitable foundation — that will spotlight plays written and directed by women in order to address the longstanding gender imbalance in American theater, as well as on Long Island.

Though HTC has staged works by women in the past, recent seasons have lacked this representation. In fact, of 11 shows produced by three East End theaters in 2024, only one was written by a woman.

“This initiative is about more than programming — it’s about equity and opportunity,” HTC President Rosemary Cline said. “We’re excited to bring audiences dynamic work from female playwrights and directors whose voices need to be heard.”

Last week, we began to take a look at houseplants, also known in the trade as “tropical foliage.” I noted that this is a great time of the year to be buying them. But which are best and will survive in your home? Simply because they are for sale in a plant shop or garden center by no means indicates that they are the right choice.

We’ve normalized something deeply strange: carving out vast tracts of land, planting a handful of shallow-rooted grasses, and pouring on water, fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides year after year. As turf displaces more ecologically valuable land, it invites a steady parade of pollution, including the two-stroke and four-stroke engines that power the maintenance machines that never seem to rest.

It’s quiet. It’s orderly. It’s catastrophic.

By Ella Gatfield “In nature, nothing exists alone.” — Rachel Carson In late spring, I got a text from my landlord: “The lawn will be mowed on Thursday.” I imagine many tenants welcome this kind of update — tidy rows, neat edges, the smell of cut gras

The consultants working for Southampton Town on its strategy for revitalizing the Riverside hamlet through the creation of a new hamlet center, where a mix of commercial and residential development can blossom, this week unveiled some more of their vision for how the redevelopment might take place in the coming years.

While the plan would encourage denser development in certain areas, the overall density of residential units across the redevelopment area would be just seven units per acre, the consultants and the town planning staff that is working with them told members of the Town Board last week.

Among musicians, one of the greatest signs of respect is being labeled a “guitarist’s guitarist.” This group often includes six-string warriors who may not have the most commercial appeal, but are recognized by their counterparts for their technical abilities and mastery of the instrument.

Among this group is Eric Johnson, who will be sharing his talents with an East End audience for a night of guitar wizardry on Friday, October 10, at The Suffolk at 8 p.m.
