We're honored to have a very special guest with us on 97.1 The Ticket this Sunday Morning at 8 AM

Joining us in the studio is an inspiring young man whose story is almost as incredible as his spirit. Ryen Defillippo was born with Spina Bifida and despite all odds, he has continued to flourish.

Ryen is one of this year's lucky recipients of support from Relentless Detroit, a powerlifting fundraising event on November 2nd and 3rd. They're an amazing foundation who provides support to families with children who have life-threatening conditions.

Listen in on Sunday morning as he talks with the docs about his story.

08/28/2018

We share our concussion takeaways:

1. A concussion is a brain injury from either a direct impact or a whiplash type injury to the head and neck. It is seen with a higher incidence in collision sports such as football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer and even wrestling, however, they also frequently occur with falls and car accidents. Any abrupt contact or blow to the head can result in a concussion.

2. Symptoms of a concussion might not occur for 24-48 hours after the incident and are most commonly not recognized by the person who sustained the injury, but rather the people around them. Common warning symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, confusion, visual disturbances, and loss of consciousness.

3. If a concussion occurs it is MOST IMPORTANT to be properly diagnosed by the appropriate physician. If a concussion is suspected the following steps should occur:
- stop sporting activity or whatever you’re doing,
- consult a physician at the first sign of any symptoms,
- if a person is in the middle of a sporting activity, there should be no same day return to play. There is a return to play protocol that involves five supervised stages before any athlete should return to play.

4. Recovery rate: 90% of people who suffer a concussion will recover within four weeks.

5. In sports, the best way to help prevent concussions is to wear appropriate protective equipment:
- helmets - cannot prevent all possible head injuries, however, helps to spread the force of impact over a large surface area, and with inside padding absorbs and dissipates the energy,
- mouth guards - decreases the chance of concussion by spreading out the forces that may occur from a jaw or facial impact.

08/21/2018

We share our hydration tips from last Sunday's show on 97.1 The Ticket:

1. Dehydration is a significant loss of body fluid that impairs normal function. Hyponatremia is a term used when the level of sodium in the blood is too low, a rare event. Both conditions have been in the news lately due to the increase in training levels of adolescents in the hot days of summer puts them at risk for hydration problems.

2. Causes of these two hydration conditions are increased activity, heat, excessive sweating and insufficient fluid consumption. Dehydration is more common. Signs of mild to moderate dehydration are thirst, dry mouth, tiredness, decreased urine output, headaches and dizziness.

3. Studies show that drinking about 2.5 cups of water before physical activity will adequately pre-hydrate. Likewise, studies have also shown that drinking 2.5 cups of water within 45 minutes of an event can fully rehydrate an individual.

4. Other research does show that after significantly intense exercise, in addition to water, a drink containing electrolytes will help you rehydrate more quickly than water alone. These are sports drinks more commonly known as Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialyte.

5. Other recovery drinks that help restore hydration and recovery of normal electrolyte balance include chocolate milk, pickle juice, coconut, cherry juice, green and black tea, non- alcoholic beer, and a beer.

On yesterday's show on 97.1 The Ticket, we had Nancy Jo McCaochan (Karma Yoga - Bloomfield Hills, Mi and Beverly Hills Club (MI)) in studio talking about meditation. Here are our takeaways:

1. Meditation is for everyone, you don’t have to be a Buddhist or a yogi to meditate.

2. Meditation has been shown to improve health and reduce chronic pain.

3. Meditation can be a powerful tool for athletes.

4. There is no ‘right way’ to meditate.

5. Even 5 minutes of meditation, 2 x per day - on the rise and fall of the abdomen or the sound of OM can make a difference.
