Thank you to everyone involved for a great day and night of living history, education and beauty to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the burning of Fort Johnston, the beginning of organized, armed revolution in the North Carolina colony.

It made me really think how cool it is to walk the ground where revolution grew, to look out at the very spot in the Cape Fear where the royal governor, representative of the king of the most powerful nation on earth hid from those he considered rabble.

250 years ago this very evening, patriots from Brunswick Town headed down the Cape Fear on their way to Fort Johnston in what is now Southport. The Royal Governor had already retreated to a British warship offshore, but taking away his refuge on land, and successfully attacking and destroying a British military target, was an important step on our way to becoming a country. It all happened right here. That’s really cool to think about. Today the Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a new historical marker in front of the Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson State Historical Site visitor center. Tomorrow there will a day of lectures and displays at Fort Johnston, culminating with an evening program remembering the burning of the Fort.

Congratulations, you guys rock!
