A tree serial killer? 🤔

Per WCSO:

“The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office continues to actively investigate the intentional poisoning of trees at Burnt Cedar Beach.

The Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID), together with members of the Incline Village community, has announced a combined $147,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons responsible.

The reward includes $25,000 committed by IVGID and $122,000 committed by a group of private donors known as the Friends of Burnt Cedar Beach.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 328-3001 and reference case number 26-4225. Information related to the investigation should not be submitted to IVGID staff.

Anonymous tips may also be submitted through Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900. The separate $1,000 Secret Witness reward remains available for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the individual or individuals involved.

NEVADA TIGHTENS RULES FOR DATA CENTER TAX BREAKS

Gov. Joe Lombardo has signed an executive order changing the conditions data-center developers must meet if they want to receive certain state tax abatements.

Under the new rules, developers seeking a partial abatement must agree to pay school taxes in full and take responsibility for their power and water costs rather than shifting those costs to utility customers.

Developers must also enter into a binding community agreement before submitting an application to the state’s economic development office.

The move comes years after Nevada created tax incentives for large technology projects. The 2015 law did not include specific requirements addressing data-center water consumption, electricity costs or similar community obligations.

But Lombardo’s order does not repeal the tax-break program.

Instead, it establishes new conditions for future applications seeking partial abatements.

That leaves the Legislature with the bigger question: Should Nevada continue offering tax incentives to attract data centers, and if so, under what conditions?

The timing is also politically significant.

Lombardo’s potential election opponent has been making data centers a campaign issue in recent weeks.

For now, the executive order changes the rules for new applicants. The larger fight over Nevada’s data-center tax policy could come before the Legislature in 2027.

Floriston Update (Thursday, 8:00 a.m.): The fire is at 640 acres and is 5% contained.

The fire remained within last night’s perimeter, with dozer line along portions of the south side and hand line around portions of the fire. Two spot fires were identified to the north.

The north side of the fire, toward Reno, remains the priority due to open line and areas where existing line needs improvement. Down-canyon winds are expected through Friday before transitioning to up-canyon winds. Forecasted winds are 6–10 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, relative humidity around 30% and daytime temperatures in the mid to high 60s.

Westbound Interstate 80 remains closed from approximately the state line through the fire area due to safety concerns, including the potential for material to roll onto the highway. Caltrans will assess roadway conditions with fire personnel to evaluate when it can safely reopen.

Evacuation warnings and orders remain in place.
