The National Endowment for the Arts canceled its grants to many arts organizations on Friday but apparently has left funding for state arts councils intact. Tony Manfredi, Executive Director of the Nevada Arts Council, spoke with Double Scoop today to clarify the details.

Later in the day, the Washington Post reported that all 10 directors who oversee grants for the NAC are leaving the agency.

Here's what we know about this rapidly changing situation.

The NEA has cancelled some Nevada funding; some remains intact; messaging from the Fed is inconsistent; all 10 NEA grant administrators reportedly quit today

Three major national arts and culture associations filed a lawsuit today, in an attempt to reinstate the funding that was terminated for 56 humanities councils, including Nevada Humanities, in early April.

The American Council of Learned Societies, the American Historical Association and the Modern Language Association filed the lawsuit against DOGE and the NEH, calling "to‬‭ require‬‭ the‬‭ Trump‬‭ Administration‬‭ to‬‭ operate‬‭ NEH‬‭ as‬ Congress intended, unless and until Congress says otherwise."

Much of the terminated funding had been allocated for arts and culture programming that organizations nationwide already had in the works, including 30 Nevada groups.

Last week, DOGE slashed Nevada Humanities' federal funding, which accounted for 75% of the group's annual budget.

This week, we have more context on what the organization does and what the cuts mean for Nevadans.

“Our board of trustees is currently examining whether we'll be able to continue our operations beyond the next few months,” said Executive Director Christina Barr. “ … A loss of 75% of our budget is a serious blow to our operations.”

30 Nevada groups had been selected for the now-canceled funding

The Trump administration is asserting its influence over some of the nation’s prominent arts and culture institutions.

Washington Post critic Phillip Kennicott said:

"What should disturb Americans about this is that unlike previous conservative administrations, this is not about pulling funding from the arts. … This seems to be explicitly not just about programming at the Kennedy Center, but part of a larger attack on the much larger nonprofit sector, which includes the major foundations and universities as well."

Trump has slashed a National Endowment for the Arts grant program for underserved audiences and drastically reorganized the Kennedy Center’s leadership.

Las Vegas artist Nancy Good closed her gallery, Core Contemporary, in December after seven years of operation. For the local visual arts scene, the shuttering was a downer note on which to end 2024, and was part of a larger trend, the dissolution of the cultural node that had developed in New Orleans Square, a funky, lively corner of the massive Commercial Center property.

Nancy spoke with veteran Southern Nevada arts writer Scott Dickensheets about the finances of running a gallery and the changing art scene—and criticized local institutions for not having better supported Las Vegas artists.
