White County High School Announces New Band Director
White County High School Administration has named its new Band Director. According to Principal Greg Wilson, the next person to lead the WCHS Band Program will be Laiton Pigg. Miss Pigg is a native of Overton County and a graduate of the University of Tennessee. While at UT – Knoxville, she excelled in the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. She became part of history while at UT, where Drum Major Rebecca Percy and Assistant Drum Major Laiton Pigg became the first female duo to lead the marching band in the band’s 148-year history.
During her time at UT-Knoxville, she helped lead the Pride of the Southland in many events, including the Presidential Inaugural Parade. Pigg and Percy also led the UT band in many halftime performances for the Volunteer Football games. Former Director of Bands at UT described Laiton (Pigg) as having an attitude of “I’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done.”
Since leaving UT, Pigg has worked in the Putnam County School System. She has served as the music teacher at Baxter Primary and Assistant Band Director for the Regiment of Black at Upperman High School. Miss Pigg was named the 2023-2024 Rotary Teacher of Excellence while serving at BPS in the Putnam County School System. Also, while in Putnam County, Ms. Pigg was given tenure for her service to PCSS.
WCHS looks forward to the direction that Ms. Pigg will lead the band program. Ms. Pigg not only brings energy but also a vast knowledge of bands and logistics. The Warrior Marching Band welcomes Ms. Pigg to the Warrior Nation.
There will be a meet-and-greet for current band members and their families on Thursday, June 4, at 6 PM in the cafeteria. Other students interested in becoming band members are invited to attend.
