Strawberries were big business in 1901 in an article appearing in the local newspaper. 60 years ago. In 1901, hundreds of people gathered on Water and Oak Streets for strawberry sales. Thousands of cases were shipped to Milwaukee, Chicago and the Dakotas. Strawberries sold from 8 to 10 cents a quart.
Bikes in jail as Sparta police impounded 26 bicycles from youthful drivers who have violated traffic regulations. Impounding lasts for two weeks at which time, bikes are returned to their owners. Repeat violations will bring a conference between the police and parents of the bike riders.
