Lady Spartans Look to Bounce Back Against Pierre in Home Matchup

Spearfish, S.D. — The Spearfish Lady Spartans (1–1) return to their home floor today looking to rebound against another Class AA state tournament qualifier, the Pierre Lady Governors.

Spearfish aims to regroup after Friday night’s 52–36 loss to Aberdeen Central, while Pierre enters the matchup coming off a 55–48 road win over Sturgis.

Both teams reached the Class AA state tournament last season, with the Spartans finishing sixth and the Lady Governors placing eighth. Spearfish also claimed last year’s meeting, a 62–45 road victory in which the Spartans controlled the pace throughout.

Historically, Pierre has held the edge, leading the series 10–4 since 2006. Spearfish snapped a five‑game skid against the Governors with last year’s win, and Pierre now looks to avoid dropping consecutive games to the Spartans for the first time since 2018.

Spearfish Aims for Second Straight Win Over Pierre in Road Rematch

Pierre S.D. - The Spearfish Spartans (2–0) are back on the court with little rest, heading to Pierre for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors (2–1) at 2:00 p.m. Despite the quick turnaround, both teams enter the contest riding the momentum from wins on Friday.

Spearfish is coming off a gritty 56–45 road victory over Aberdeen Central on Friday, a game in which the Spartans steadily pulled away after a slow first quarter. Pierre, meanwhile, returned home and responded impressively from last weekend’s road loss, defeating Sturgis Brown 61–50 in a contest that felt tighter than the final margin.

Spearfish rolled past Pierre 62–46 in their last meeting in December 2024, snapping a four‑game losing streak in the series. Pierre still holds a 10–4 advantage over Spearfish since 2006, and the Spartans are aiming for back‑to‑back wins over the Governors for the first time since the 2008–09 stretch. Doing so on the road will make the challenge even steeper.

Spartans Pull Away Late to Defeat Eagles on the Road

The Spearfish boys improved to 2–0 with a solid 56–45 road victory over Aberdeen Central on Friday night. After trailing 13–9 at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans settled in and outscored the Eagles in each of the final three periods to secure the win.

Bennett Kortan led the way with 16 points, earning Superior Auto Solutions Player of the Game honors. Kade Vavruska added 15 points, giving Spearfish a steady one‑two punch throughout the night.

Aberdeen Central was paced by Luke Swanson, who finished with 15 points, including 12 in the first half. Swanson battled injuries after halftime, limiting his minutes and impact down the stretch.

The setback drops Spearfish to 1–1 on the season, while Aberdeen Central continues its early‑season surge, improving to 3–0 and extending its winning streak to three games.
