We are VERY proud of a lady we consider a member of the WNCW family. Madeline Dierauf is an amazing person and artist. You hear her dad, Roland, on the radio most every day. You hear her music on the station in bands like The Wilder Flower, but her accomplishments go beyond music. Check out this story in today's Bluegrass Today!!

Madeline Dierauf, fiddler and vocalist with The Wilder Flower, was celebrated this week with the Key to the City in her hometown of Brevard, NC, along with a proclamation announcing this as Madeline Dierauf Week in Brevard. She's been a part of Goin' Across The Mountain for a decade on WNCW. Today is her birthday. Here's some of the story:

75 Years Ago Today, an Icon Was Born
On May 29, 1950, Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 was officially outshopped from the famed East End Shops in Roanoke, Virginia. Built by the skilled hands of Norfolk & Western’s own craftsmen, 611 was designed, engineered, and constructed entirely in-house. With her sleek bullet nose, elegant streamlining, and over 80,000 pounds of tractive effort, 611 wasn’t just another steam engine, she was the pinnacle of modern steam passenger locomotive design.
Over the decades, 611 has become more than just a locomotive - she’s a worldwide icon. Revered by railfans across the globe, she represents the very best of what the golden age of steam railroading once was: powerful, graceful, and built to last. Her striking appearance, speed, and story have earned her international recognition in books, videos, model railroads, and exhibitions.
From pulling Norfolk & Western’s premier passenger trains at over 100 mph in the 1950s to thrilling hundreds of thousands during modern-day excursions, No. 611 continues to capture imaginations and inspire generations of steam enthusiasts, preservationists, and dreamers.
