We are feeling truly honored to see an entire chapter of our recently published book, Conservation Confidential, excerpted in yesterday's issue of The Seattle Times. It's a testament to Mitch Friedman's hard-earned wisdom and the legacy of his impactful work with Conservation Northwest. Above all, we hope that Mitch's words will inspire radical new collaborations across the political spectrum for the betterment of our communities, timberlands, wilderness and wildlife.
An excerpt from Conservation Northwest founder/executive director Mitch Friedman's new book, in which he recounts his career from activist to collaborator.

Conservation Confidential recounts the wild path Mitch Friedman took from radical Earth First! activist engaging in controversial protests to the founder and longtime director of Conservation Northwest.
Part memoir, part guide on strategy for activists and liberal citizens, these provocative lessons are timely not only for conservation campaigns but for our national political moment at large, extolling the virtues of collaborative tactics that succeed by enacting common values rather than polarizing. Here is the rare instance of an accomplished activist leader challenging his own movement to reject its hubris to better serve both nature and our ailing democracy.
"A legend in the conservation community, with myriad landmark successes over his decades of activism, Mitch Friedman distills the lessons he has learned. Brutally honest, poignantly reflective, and beautifully written, Conservation Confidential is the open-hearted story of a life well-lived."
~Denis Hayes, CEO of the Bullitt Foundation, author of Cowed, and national coordinator of the first Earth Day in 1970

Another thrilling Luke McCain novel by Rob Phillips is on the way! CASCADE RENEGADES will be published on December 5th, just in time for Christmas! And it's a doozy, folks...
"In Eastern Washington, a group of young ranchers form a secret alliance to hunt the gray wolves that are continually preying on their herds. Using a hidden site on the dark web, they coordinate illegal kills, leaving a trail of poached carcasses and baffled authorities.
Miles away, a wealthy environmentalist who helped reintroduce the wolves to the region decades earlier reads about the so-called wolf-killing “Renegades” in The Seattle Times. Furious, he hires hackers and fixers to unmask the people slaughtering “his” wolves. When names surface, he takes justice into his own hands—murdering one Renegade and setting his sights on the next.
But Washington State Fish and Wildlife officer Luke McCain is already on the trail. He identifies the next target—and races to warn him. As the killer closes in, a final confrontation plays out in the cold wilderness, where a wounded man faces the very predators he once vowed to protect. And where the law of nature is more brutal than any courtroom."
Sunnyside folks, you've got several chances to catch Mitch Friedman during the Eastern WA leg of his summer book tour. He'll be appearing in Ellensburg, Spokane, Tonasket and Mazama on consecutive nights, Sept. 2-5. Hope to see you out in the wild!

Located in downtown Spokane, Washington, Latah Books is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the publication of meaningful, well-crafted books and to helping fill the interstitial spaces in our literary community.
We are proud to collaborate with numerous award-winning and bestselling authors, and we especially enjoy supporting the careers of writers typically underrepresented and overlooked in today’s literary ecosystem: authors from rural and small-town America, authors from working-class and blue collar backgrounds, incarcerated authors, and authors of color. While we can only publish a small percentage of the manuscripts we receive through our traditional publishing program, our mission is to support as many emerging authors as possible through our writing workshops and Indie Support program.
Why Latah?
A Nez Perce word, Latah (pronounced LAY-tə) is the name of the creek along which most of our staff has lived, worked, recreated, meditated and fallen in love for many years. Latah Creek is a modest but vital stream flowing onward to greater waters. We can't imagine a more fitting name for the spirit of our enterprise, and for honoring the legacy of those who cultivated this land before us.
Why Nonprofit?
Meaningful literature is essential to a thriving, democratic society, yet many of the most enlightening and innovative books cannot generate enough revenue to be published successfully with a traditional, market-driven approach. Latah Books was granted nonprofit status to help ensure that quality literature is available to readers, regardless of profit. Our 501(c)(3) status allows us to expand on the success of our traditional publishing program while unlocking vital book projects that require alternative funding sources, such as longform investigative journalism, books by prisoners, community collections, and reissuing important out-of-print books. Being a nonprofit also allows us to better support community literacy through writing workshops, book donation drives and other creative initiatives in development.
