The original greenhouse was situated at the corner of 18th and Grand until 1912, when it was moved to its current site. It underwent renovations in 1974 in preparation for the World Expo, and the central dome was introduced in 1988.
In its early days, the greenhouse served various functions, with its primary role being the cultivation of seedlings and the storage of plants and tools for the park. Throughout the harsh Spokane winters, the greenhouse was heated using coal.
Before 1974, access to the greenhouse was restricted for park visitors, only opening for special events like Christmas and Easter. It was during the 1974 World Expo that the public was first welcomed inside to admire unique displays.
