The Kalaloch “Tree of Life” is slowly coming to the end of its lifespan. After decades of defying gravity, suspended between two eroding bluffs with its roots exposed to wind, rain, and tide, the weight of time is finally catching up. This was taken a week ago. 😞

Visitors to Olympic National Park have noticed the once-proud Sitka spruce sagging lower than ever, its root system no longer hovering dramatically above the gully, but beginning to rest on the earth below. With each storm and seasonal tide, the sandy soil beneath it slips a little farther away—offering less to hold onto and signaling that the tree’s iconic defiance may soon become a memory etched into Northwest lore. 🌲

It has stood as a quiet emblem of hope, resilience, and that beautiful stubbornness of nature—even when all odds seem stacked against it, as well as a sobering reminder that sometimes even the most determined forces cannot outrun time.

🎉 What?!?! Today is my 6 year self-employment anniversary!!! I’ve sacrificed a lot to give the gift of our publication to the community—time, sleep, plenty of weekends—but it’s been worth it a hundred times over. Drop me a note about how our page has helped you feel more connected to where we live - it would make my whole day!!! 👇🏼

I remember so vividly when I closed the door to my classroom for the very last time and took the leap into working for myself. It was equal parts possibility and fear—but deep down, I knew that betting on myself was the only answer that felt right. Since then, this journey has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever chosen to do. It’s been full of thrilling moments, tough lessons, and more growth than I ever imagined.

What has happened between then and now? Well, I started this publication with my very best friend, and then she moved to the west side with her husband and sold her share to me. I’ve hired a team of subcontractors, then employees for the first time ever, and have had amazing humans come and go from our office to continue pursuing their dreams, too. Each one of them has taught me such valuable lessons. I’ve endured personal heartbreak at epic levels, and kept pushing through with a dedicated core team of humans with the biggest hearts. They carried me through the darkest days I’ve ever experienced and celebrated with me and equal measure when we continued to grow together! Every step has been the biggest honor.

Moving to a fully digital model was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made, and has energized me even more deeply to expand on what we do best - reach people where they look for information most and make the user experience as seamless and beautiful as possible. I’ve never been more excited to see how others step up to the plate—bringing their own unique voice to Trending pages in communities across the region.

This is just the beginning. Truly. What we’re building now—with our amazing team of page owners, contributors, and partners gives me so much joy to see the impact we will continue to make in our communities and beyond. 🫶🏻

🌸 Manito Park is absolutely peaking right now—and this stunning shot by James Richman Photography captures it in all its dreamy, blooming glory. It’s giving “main character walk,” “let’s bring a picnic,” and “okay fine, nature is healing.”

Tucked in the heart of Spokane, Manito was founded way back in 1904 (she’s timeless!), and is beautifully maintained thanks to Spokane Parks & Rec and the incredible Friends of Manito—who keep it thriving, season after season. 🙌 Don’t miss a slow dilly-dally through the Rose Garden or a peek inside Gaiser Conservatory at the top of the hill. This is your sign to go fall in love with this park all over again. 💚

If you haven’t hit up El Sazón Birrieria yet, I’m actually mad for you. This place is hands-down one of my favorite spots for tacos that are insanely good and actually authentic. The kind where the tortillas are made fresh right in front of you, the carnitas are sliced off a giant spit with serious flair, and the birria consomé is so rich and flavorful you’ll want to drink it straight—or at least order the giant to-go size so you can keep the party going at home.

The menu’s packed with variety, so it’s the perfect place to try something new every time you go, and they’re so fast and efficient you’ll barely have time to scroll before your food is ready. They’ve got a killer salsa bar, all the classic toppings, and some of the best horchata in town—creamy, sweet, and exactly what you want to sip between bites.

Yes, they deliver on the apps, but if you can? Go in person. The vibes, the smells, the sound of tortillas sizzling—that’s the move. El Sazón is local, legit, and absolutely deserves a spot in your regular rotation.
