What Boeing's production ramp-up actually means for the Pacific Northwest Tier 2-3 suppliers — and why national coverage misses the real story.

Boeing has announced significant rate increases for 737 MAX and 787 programs.

For the primes, that's a positive headline.

For the Pacific Northwest supply chain — it's one of the most complex operating environments in years.

Tier 2-3 suppliers are being asked to scale capacity they deliberately reduced during the post- pandemic downturn. Hiring in a tight labor market. Requalifying tooling and processes. Managing material lead times that haven't normalized.

The suppliers navigating this well have three things in common: they're visible to multiple buyers (not dependent on a single prime), they've rigorously maintained their certifications, and they have a clear picture of their own capacity.

Northwest Aerospace News covers this supply chain reality every issue — with the regional specificity and source relationships that national publications don't have.

A) Workforce — not enough trained technicians entering the pipeline fast enough

B) Supply chain pressure — lead times, material costs, and qualification delays from primes

C) Visibility — excellent Tier 2-3 shops that qualified buyers simply cannot find

The aerospace workforce shortage is the defining challenge of this decade. Pacific
Northwest is both at the center of the problem and home to some of the most
innovative solutions.

The numbers are real: the industry needs to add hundreds of thousands of workers globally over the next decade.

In the Pacific Northwest, programs like AJAC — the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee — are directly addressing this by producing production-ready aerospace technicians in Puget Sound.

Clover Park Technical College, Lake Washington Institute of Technology, and Everett Community College are building curriculum that feeds directly into the regional supply chain.

The question isn't whether the workforce exists — it's whether the industry can find it, train it, and retain it fast enough.

Northwest Aerospace News covers this workforce story every issue:

→ Which programs are graduating students and what they're trained for → Which companies are hiring and what they're looking for → Career profiles of professionals who built their lives in the aerospace trades If this story affects your work — subscribe free and stay current.
