A Bead of Amber on Her Tongue

Congrats to The MFA at EWU alum Jennifer Pullen on her new book, A Bead of Amber on Her Tongue, which revisits the classic stories of Helen of Troy and Aphrodite with contemporary twists and new intrigue.

Helen of Troy and Aphrodite: two classical paragons of beauty and love. These two figures have served as the inspiration for innumerable works of art in the Western cannon. In the twenty-first century, however, what do their stories provide but a reminder of the predictable roles which sexism has as...

New Voices: “Century Women” by Maura Lammers

Check out this great story from recent The MFA at EWU grad Maura Lammers!

"They sit in the break room at Century, the store where Serena works as of today. The fan in the corner is broken, and the air feels as stagnant as pond water. . . Courtney looks up and says, Imagine a woman you deeply admire for her persona and style. We all have women like that in our lives. A woman who inspires you in everything she says and does. She is good at her job, and looks good doing it. From head to toe she looks like herself. From her shoes to her perfume to her eye shadow. She is exactly what you hope to be. That’s the Century Woman. That is how we want you to look every time you show up for work."

When Serena’s plan to teach English abroad goes awry, she finds herself returning home and working at Century, a high-end women’s fashion store. “We have high expectations for our Century Women,” her manager tells her. But what does it mean...

How Romance Novels Could Save Straight Sex – Electric Literature

Check out alum Lareign Ward's latest article on Electric Literature!

"But I think the real issue Society in General has with romance novels is that they’re books centered on a woman’s desires, including her sexual ones, and they’re usually written by women. When done right, that sort of thing can feel revolutionary."

Books centered on women’s desire taught me to expect more from sex, and they could do the same for our whole culture
