I love seeing native plants in landscaping installments.

Here is a serviceberry tree also known as Shadbush or Juneberry. They are native to the Midwest and thrive in the majority of North America. Serviceberry is gorgeous and low maintenance which is one of the reasons it’s often used in landscaping. Beautiful white blooms are followed by small fruit similar in appearance and flavor to a blueberry and then followed by lovely fall foliage. They provide habitat for birds and are a larval host plant to over 100 species of butterflies. These are a small understory tree, growing 6-20 feet, perfect for a small yard or garden.

If you’re interested in adding a serviceberry to your home or garden, I have a few still available at the stand. $10 for a gallon sized pot at the roadside stand in Springfield 45502

Resharing this tomato guide with all of my top tips!

🍅 feed
Tomatoes are heavy feeders and benefit from an early feeding
🍅 cover the soil
Fungal issues and airflow are both helped by covering the soil, straw works great!
🍅 trellis early
Twine, tomato cages, help keep those plants off the ground!
🍅 plant deeply
Adventitious roots grow along the stems, the deeper you plant the more roots will grow
🍅 choose the right varieties
Ask yourself you plan on doing with your tomatoes and plant the varieties that are best suited for that!

What other tips do you have for tomatoes?

My gardening style could be described as “lazy” at best. My beds are not picture perfect and oftentimes things get missed or done late. Yet, I still manage to grow a lot of beautiful nursery plants and a lot of food for my family.

Here’s an example of something done late:

The garlic on the left was planted right on time. The bed was well-weeded and freshly topped with compost.

The garlic on the left was forgotten about and planted sometime late. Like really late. Probably 4 months after “perfect” conditions.

Yet here it is, definitely still producing bulbs. It will still provide scapes to harvest this spring and will still produce bulbs this summer.

They won’t be perfect but gardening doesn’t have to be perfect to still be worthwhile.

In general, I prune my elderberries down to the ground in the winter.

Pruning does a few things for the plants:
#1 it stimulates the plant to grow and produce berries
#2 it keeps the plants a more manageable height for hand-harvesting berries
#3 removing dead or damaged canes increases airflow and improves overall plant health

However this past winter I didn’t get to a few rows. Life with 5 kids and a joint issue flare-up put me way behind. These are mature plants and will be fine with skipping a year. However, they look like they will flower very early! I’m interested to see the comparison in production from these plants compared with the ones that were pruned properly.

If you’re interested in adding elderberry to your own garden or landscape, we have a lot available at the stand and for shipping on our website https://www.lonepinefarmstead.com/product-page/small-elderberry-plant
