In Off the Couch Conversations we've been exploring the differences between "affirming" therapy and client-centered Carl Rogers "unconditional positive regard". We broke down the APAs def. of unconditional positive regard and compared it to Webster's definition of affirming, discussing where a counselors natural human bias should remain within the therapy office.

Recently we learned of reports of a local group of counselors refusing treatment to inquiring clients due to their perceived political leanings. As counselors it's important to be aware of your own limits to treatment whether they be religious, personal expertise and training, and moral or ethical codes. Upon these various reasons, it may be incumbent upon a clinician to refer a client to a provider better suited to meet their needs.

The question we will be exploring is as follows:

Do you feel opposing political views should fall within the category of justifiable reasons to refuse services to a client and how should that be navigated if it is?
