At this week's District 186 school board meeting, the board approved $3 million in budget cuts and discussed strategies for addressing an $18 million deficit, including using the fund balance.

Members voted to hire an individual roofer for district facilities and added a middle school wrestling program to the budget. Other updates included celebrations, upcoming events and the superintendent search process.

HSHS St. John's Hospital is hosting a Car Seat Safety Check Event on Saturday, Sept. 13.

At this free event, a certified child passenger safety technician can work with you to check your child's car seat and provide education to ensure it is installed correctly.

The event will be at the Women & Children's Clinic parking garage at 400 N. 9th St. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kids age 6-10 can take part in the Funshop Kids Club while parents enjoy a night out.

Kids get an evening filled with crafts, STEM projects, group games and tons of hands-on fun! Each month features a new theme, so there’s always something different to explore.

Sessions take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. The cost is $30 for Springfield residents or $35 for non-residents.
