The Illinois State Museum will host Freeze Fest on Friday, Jan. 2, and Saturday, Jan. 3, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m., a two-day celebration of all things frosty.

Kick off the new year with a Stone Soup Hike, organized by the Sierra Club Sangamon Valley Group.

Meet at the stone shelter inside Lincoln Memorial Garden's entrance at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 for an easy one to two mile walk over mostly woodchipped paths and then return to eat and socialize.

Start the new year with a First Day Hike at a state park on New Year's Day.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hosting self-guided hikes at 17 state parks on Jan. 1. These free, family-friendly hikes are available to the public.

Last year, more than 50 hikers of all ages, along with some adorable dogs, kicked off the new year on the trails of Lincoln 's New Salem State Historic Site.
