They had known for three weeks. The vet had told them gently and honestly and had said quality of life and had said when you feel the time is right and they had gone home and given him three more weeks of everything β every walk he wanted even when the walks were short and slow, every meal he loved, every evening on the couch between them exactly as it had always been. They had taken photographs. They had video of him on his last good day β a Tuesday two weeks ago when he had chased a leaf across the backyard with something that looked enough like joy that they had both laughed and then cried immediately after from the specific pain of a perfect moment that is also a goodbye. His name was Scout. He had been with them since before they were married β had been hers first, had accepted him when he came into her life with the particular graciousness of a Beagle who has assessed a situation and decided it is acceptable. Scout had been at the wedding in a bow tie that he had tolerated for forty five minutes before removing it with great dignity. He had been in every home they had shared. He had been thirteen years of every morning and every evening and every ordinary in between. They sat in that waiting room with him in the blanket and they did not rush. The vet did not rush them. They stayed in that room before the room for as long as they needed because some things you cannot prepare for entirely and you can only move through them as slowly and as gently as the dog deserves. Scout's breathing was slow and easy. His face was peaceful. They were there the whole time. They did not look away once.
