ON THIS DAY IN ST LOUIS SPORTS HISTORY :

Falcons thrash the Rams

January 15, 2005

Atlanta Falcons rout the St. Louis Rams 47-17 at the Georgia Dome, with dominant performances from Michael Vick (running), Warrick Dunn (rushing TD), and special teams ace Allen Rossum (return TD, playoff record punt return yards) powering the Falcons, while the Rams' defense struggled and their offense couldn't keep pace in a lopsided victory for Atlanta that sent them to the NFC Championship.

It would also be the very last playoff game for a St. Louis base NFL.

1988-1-15: On This Day in Professional Football History: St. Louis Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill submitted a letter of intent to NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle notifying him and the rest of the NFL that the Cardinals were moving to Phoenix, Arizona. The team planned to begin play at Sun Devil Stadium during the 1988 NFL season.

Bidwill said, “I made up my mind on Wednesday and I still may have some reservations at this point and time. This is a very hard time for me, but you can’t fight city hall.” The move would mark the 3rd team to move in just 6 seasons, (Cardinals, Colts & Raiders). He was asked if he would sue the NFL if the vote to move failed. “I certainly don’t want to sue anyone,” Bidwill said.

At the time, Phoenix had the 21st largest television market. A $160 million, 73,000 seated downtown domed stadium was planned. Bidwell was promised: Two-thirds of the revenue generated from the skyboxes at Cardinal games, 50% of all ticket sales, split game day concessions and parking with Arizona State University.

The city of Jacksonville, Florida also made an offer to get the Cardinals. Jacksonville officials offered 10-years of guaranteed sellouts at the 82,000 seat Gator Bowl which would be worth $125 million.

Baltimore wanted the Cardinals also. City officials offered a new stadium, with a dome option, to be built at an Inner Harbor location. The Cardinals would have to play at Memorial stadium for 2 years while the stadium was constructed.

Dallas Cowboys president Tex Schramm said, “It’s of great concern to the NFL. St. Louis better address the stadium problem. Certainly, no one will want to step into Bill Bidwill’s shoes. Busch stadium is too small and it is contoured for baseball.”

Money was definitely an issue for Bidwill in St. Louis. Busch stadium had a football capacity of 54,392 while Sun Devil Stadium seats 70,491. The TV contract provided NFL teams $17 million each. But players' salaries increased at a rapid pace. In 1982, the average player made $90,000. The figure increased to $230,000 for 1987.

St. Louis Mayor Vincent Schoemehl said, “We intend to defend the reputation of St. Louis before the National Football League,” The city of St. Louis planned to file a protest to block the franchise’s move to Arizona. However, Schoemehl did not say if city officials would file a lawsuit to block the team.
