Long before job sites had tablets and modeling software, builders were calculating board footage by hand to make sure every piece of lumber was accounted for. Here are a couple of our own classic copies of Scribner's Lumber and Log Book...versus our new computer generated models today.

But even with all the tech we have today, the principle hasn’t changed. Board footage—not linear feet—is what tells you the true volume of material you’re working with. It’s the difference between knowing how long a board is… and knowing how much wood your project actually needs.

Old-school math. Modern modeling. Same reason: accuracy matters.

We took you on a quick tour of the behind the scenes of our sawmill process back during Manufacturing Month. Now we’re giving you a closer look at one of the first steps in turning logs into lumber: the merchandiser infeed. Long before becoming a finished board - before any cutting, drying, or grading - logs arrives at Biewer sawmills in every shape, size, and grade.

The merchandiser scans and measures each one to determine the best cutting strategy — ensuring maximum recovery and efficiency. Nothing goes to waste. By accurately identifying the best cuts for each log, we reduce waste and make the most of every harvested tree.

Building safer starts with smarter materials. 🔥🏡

As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense, builders are turning to fire treated wood (FRTW) to help protect homes, businesses, and communities in high-risk areas.

Our accounting team took learning on the road with visits to Biewer Sawmill - McBain and Biewer Lumber - Lansing. For many—Jessica, Jaye, Emily, and Andrea—it was a first look at a mill and treating facility, and the experience sparked great conversations and curiosity.

Huge thanks to our on-site hosts, Kris Demel and Nick Biewer and their teams, for walking the accounting team through the full manufacturing process and making the visit hands-on and meaningful. And shout-out to Wes Windover and Katie Putvin for the bonus crash course on northern Michigan logging.

Experiences like this remind us: when teams connect, we grow stronger together.

At Biewer, every piece of fire-treated wood is pressure-impregnated and code-compliant — because doing the job right matters. Our teams work hard every day to produce products that not only meet expectations but exceed them, ensuring builders and communities can count on Biewer quality and safety.

Not all fire-retardant treatments are the same — and the difference shows in performance, durability, and compliance.

👏 A big thank-you to our production crews for their attention to detail and commitment to excellence!
