We're excited to see a brief but positive review from the Portland Book Review on our book In The Shadow of the Apocalypse!

Thank you, Portland Book Review and Jo Niederhoff!

In 1948, Dinu Pillat finished the novel that would become the centerpiece of a trial that would lead to years of imprisonment and, possibly, his death by cancer. That novel was then stashed away in the archives of the Romanian secret service and would not be recovered until 2010. Now, after nearly a...

"...Vasia slowly walked down the street, his hand gripping the revolver in his right pocket. He could feel nothing special. Perhaps just a slight sensation of thirst. As it happened, he was only about fifteen meters from the prime minister’s house when the driver quickly took his place at the wheel, followed by the policeman, while the sergeant hurried to open the door. Chilled to the fingertips, Vasia gave a barely controllable start as he recognized [prime minister] Sebastian Răutu, about to step onto the footboard.

Vasia managed to hold out the revolver with a steady hand. He fired once, twice, three, four, five, six, seven, eight times at the man in front of him, who had fallen in a heap at the first shot." (Dinu Pillat, In the Shadow of the Apocalypse)

"In any case, at that very moment, a number of gendarmes had appeared from different directions, ready to force their way through the crowd with the butts of their rifles. The fighting had started without further ado and had rapidly engulfed the whole area of the marketplace. An uproar, like the sound of a hailstorm, with screams and oaths mingled indiscriminately, had risen deafeningly along the edge of the town, where the shutters of the booths were immediately closed. Who had fired the first shots? It was hard to tell. At one point, as he was struggling to break free from the clutches of a group of people, Rotaru had seen Andriţoiu close by, slumped on the ground, with the other comrade from theology trying desperately to help him. He had been shot in the stomach." (Dinu Pillat, In the Shadow of the Apocalypse, 1948)

A historical fiction book with its own twisted history, In the Shadow of the Apocalypse invites you to explore the psychology behind Romania's interwar fascist movement.

It has been a joy to work on this project with Monica Pillat, the author's daughter, who also signs the Afterword: The Story of the Condemned Book. George T. Sipos signs the Introduction: A Novel of Its Time. And Ours.
