The University of Richmond’s Distant Viewing Lab has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand access to artificial intelligence tools for digital humanities research.

The three-year grant will support the lab’s efforts to share its open-source platforms, including the Distant Viewing Toolkit, with a broader range of users. The software allows researchers, educators, and cultural institutions to apply AI-powered computer vision models to large collections of visual media without requiring programming expertise or specialized equipment.

A federal judge on Thursday struck down two Trump administration directives aimed at dismantling DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs at schools and universities across the United States.

In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Stephanie Gallagher, a Trump appointee, said the U.S. Department of Education violated federal law when it threatened to cut off funding from institutions that continued DEI initiatives. The guidance had been on hold since April, when multiple courts temporarily blocked portions of the department’s anti-DEI measures.

The U.S. Department of Justice has accused George Washington University (GWU) of violating federal civil rights law by “acting deliberately indifferent” to reports of antisemitism on campus, escalating tensions between the Trump administration and higher education institutions.

GWU spokesperson Shannon McClendon rejected the characterization, stating the university is reviewing the DOJ’s findings. “GW condemns antisemitism, which has absolutely no place on our campuses or in a civil and humane society,” McClendon said. “Our actions clearly demonstrate our commitment to addressing antisemitic actions and promoting an inclusive campus environment by upholding a safe, respectful, and accountable environment.”

Princeton University will eliminate tuition for most students from U.S. households earning up to $250,000 a year starting this fall, marking one of the most generous financial aid expansions in the Ivy League.

The university also announced that families making $150,000 or less will have the total cost of attendance covered—tuition, housing, meals, books, and personal expenses—through grants, not loans. Students from households earning up to and in some cases beyond $350,000 will also qualify for aid, particularly if they have multiple children in college.

Stanford University will eliminate 363 staff positions this fall in a sweeping cost-cutting measure driven by federal policy shifts, mounting operational expenses, and escalating tax burdens. The layoffs, which represent nearly 2% of the university’s 13,000-person administrative and technical workforce, are set to take effect between September 30 and November 1, according to a state-mandated WARN Act notice filed last week.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently issued new guidance that casts doubt on a wide range of common DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) practices used by colleges and universities, warning that they may violate federal civil rights laws.

In a nine-page memo sent to all federal agencies, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi described policies that account for applicants’ geographic origin, socioeconomic background, personal hardship, or cultural experiences as potentially “unlawful.” The memo, though described as “non-binding,” is framed as a set of “best practices” for institutions that receive federal funding — including most colleges and universities.
