Advanced middle school through collegiate โ€” the last exercise in The Playful Choir is about holding your own rhythm against what you hear everyone else doing.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐ž๐ž๐ซ ๐‘๐ก๐ฒ๐ญ๐ก๐ฆ ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ž uses the classic stadium clap rhythm. Two groups: Group 1 claps straight through. Group 2 claps the same rhythm, but counts aloud between each repetition โ€” counting 1 to 8. After 8 cycles, the patterns realign.

Then Jonas mixes 1s and 2s across the choir โ€” no one stands next to their group anymore. Each singer must hold their own structure without the help of neighbors. The moment when both groups converge after 8 cycles is one of the most satisfying in the book.

Taylor Scott Davis's Requiem โ€” recorded by VOCES8 for Decca Classics โ€” received its United States premiere last month, performed by Quintessence under Matthew Greer with VOCES8 US Scholars.

Recognition like this for one of Galaxy's featured composers is worth bringing into the classroom โ€” a real-world example of where advanced choral writing and professional performance careers intersect for students studying his music.

Middle school through collegiate โ€” this one produces laughter immediately.

๐‰๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ ๐ˆ๐ง, ๐‰๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ ๐Ž๐ฎ๐ญ builds to a step that is genuinely hard: singers say ๐‰๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ ๐ข๐ง! while jumping out. Their mouth agrees with Jonas; their body disobeys him.

Step 3 splits speech and movement: repeat the conductor's words, do the opposite action. This trains the mental flexibility that singers need when instructions change quickly or when gesture and verbal cue carry different information โ€” which is most of conducting.

"Vocal lines that overlap and intensify to stunning effect." โ€” The Wall Street Journal, on Taylor Scott Davis's Requiem.

A useful example for the classroom: what does a critic mean by "overlapping vocal lines"? Hear it directly in this performance by VOCES8 Choir & Orchestra, Barnaby Smith conducting โ€” the same passage that received its United States premiere on July 19 through Quintessence.

Requiem by Taylor Scott Davis โ€” recorded by VOCES8 for Decca Classics, and now performed live: Quintessence gave the work its United States premiere on July 19, Matthew Greer conducting.

A good discussion piece for advanced choirs and collegiate programs โ€” how a new choral-orchestral work moves from studio recording to concert stage, and what that trajectory tells a director about a piece's viability.

"My Love Walks in Velvet" by Gwyneth Walker has been selected for a reading session at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival โ€” July 22, 2026.

Walker's writing handles register change well, and the melodic lines give developing voices something to work toward without outpacing them. If you haven't looked at this piece, it's worth adding to your consideration list.

Middle school through collegiate โ€” this is where rehearsal focus starts.

Jonas conducts. The choir claps on his ictus. That's it โ€” but what it builds is an ensemble that watches the conductor, responds instantly, and starts every rehearsal in the same room together.

๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฉ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐Œ๐ž begins as simple call-and-response clapping and moves to reading actual conducting gestures. The transition from copying a clap to reading real conducting is exactly where the skill transfer happens.

Works for every level, every age group, including non-singers.
