When Typhoon Tino struck Cebu in the early morning of November 4, the Aguspina family in Dumlog, Talisay City thought the worst had passed, but as floodwaters began to rise, one clever cat made sure his humans were safe.
Meet Neko, a four-year-old family pet who had just celebrated his fourth year with the family on November 3.
The next morning, he would become their unexpected hero.
In an interview with MyTV Cebu, David Paul Aguspina, who was sleeping on the first floor, shared that power had already gone out around 4 to 5AM while heavy rains and strong winds battered the city, and Neko, unusually alert, kept staring out the window as if sensing something was wrong.
โSo the night of the storm happened, we had already lost power, probably around 4 or 5 AM. I fell asleep, but half asleep because I was hearing strong rain and winds. The whole time I was downstairs, Neko was just staring at the window,โ he recalled.
Paul had been in the living room, where his laptop was on a short glass coffee table, โI donโt know why, but Neko just kept looking outsideโmaybe animal instinct or something. Probably he saw the water rising. He rushed from the couch toward me, and in doing so, he stepped on the laptop and it fell to the floor, that sound woke me up. When I picked it up, the floor was already wet, and water was starting to rush in. When I looked out the window, I saw the floodwater rising, so I rushed upstairs to wake my family and save as many things and essentials as we could.โ
Paulโs family, who had been upstairs, quickly acted after he woke them up. Within minutes, ankle-deep water surged dangerously higher, forcing them to grab what they could and evacuate to a nearby neighborโs three-story house with their three pets including Neko.
โIf you know me personally, lisod jud ko pa-mathon, lisod jud ko pukawon. That morning, the sound of the laptop falling woke me up and really saved my life. If it hadnโt, Iโd be dead by now,โ David said. โI was the only one sleeping on the first floor while everyone else was on the second floor. Even though I didnโt drown, I could have swallowed some floodwater, which couldโve killed me too.โ
โEven though I lost my laptop and many things, I just thank God nga safe rako and my family. My mom and dad are currently checked in at a hotel, and my siblings and I are staying in Banawa at my sisterโs house. I thank God for Neko, because he really saved my life. Who knows, without him, I wouldnโt be alive to tell this story, and my family might have lost more because of the flood.โ
Just one day after marking his fourth year with the Aguspina family, Neko proved that heroes come in all formsโeven with fur, whiskers, and a brave heart.
