He took 9 weeks of vacation last year and still had to tell his team to take MORE.
Kevin Cheney doesn't just allow vacation at his firm. He actively encourages it.
His minimum expectation for every employee? 2–3 weeks off per year.
Why? Because he's seen what happens without it:
"When you go long periods of time without breaks and without vacation, even the best employees start going down to 90, 80, 70% because they just get a little burned out."
It doesn't matter if it's a beach, a trip, or just a day on the couch doing absolutely nothing. Rest is part of the job.
100% efficiency in the office starts with actual recovery outside of it.

"I don't care where you work. I don't care when you work."
Billie Tarascio said something in this week's episode that reframes the whole unlimited PTO debate:
Lawyers? They can essentially have unlimited PTO. Their output is measurable, hours billed, revenue collected, client satisfaction. As long as your team knows what to expect, you're communicating, and your clients are taken care of go wherever you want, whenever you want.
But here's the problem:
"That can't be the policy because employers have to have rules that are the same for all employees. Unlimited PTO does not work depending on the job."
When you have intake staff, receptionists, and office-based team members who need to physically be somewhere, you can't hand everyone the same blank check.
It's not about trust. It's about job function.

"If someone abuses it — that's on me."
Kevin Cheney doesn't make new employees wait to earn their benefits. Health insurance? Day one. 401k? Day one. Unlimited PTO? Day one.
No waiting periods. No vesting schedules. No hoops to jump through.
And when people ask him, "Aren't you worried someone will just take the job to get a free vacation?" his answer is brutally honest:
"If that happens, I have a really bad interview system. That's an ownership mistake."
