Rawthentic fam,
We can’t thank you enough for tuning in to listen to our show over the years. We’ve loved the opportunity to share and support the music of innovative (and oft-times independent) Black artists that wouldn’t normally get airplay on FM radio, let alone during the afternoon drive timeslot of 4 - 7pm - even if it was just once a week. We would have loved to continue on but there was time for a change.
While our work with KDHX has been well-received by our audience and validates its value as a cultural fixture in St. Louis, there are underlying issues within the station that proves that we are not valued beyond what we can produce for them. There have been many statements made regarding the racist, sexist, and other demeaning behaviors cultivated and nurtured throughout KDHX’s history. In those circumstances, the leadership has failed its staff, volunteers and community by not fixing the problem but instead sweeping it under the rug. So, we felt it only right to remove ourselves from a space that not only devalues us and those who look like us but also refuses to take responsibility for its actions.
Just as we saw it fit to make a change, KDHX should do the same. Its leadership including Kelly Wells (Executive Director) and the Board of Directors have perpetuated and sustained the toxic atmosphere that plagues the station. The work that needs to be done internally is not going to happen as long as those in power remain in that position. Until the leadership and culture changes, KDHX will remain a beacon of hypocrisy in the St. Louis arts and cultural community.
Again, we appreciate those who have supported us over the years and we recognize the impact our show has had in the time we’ve been on KDHX. With that, we ask that you, as a supporter of Rawthentic, hold KDHX accountable for its actions and inactions, hypocrisy, and abuse of marginalized communities.
In the meantime, we are working towards continuing the mission of Rawthentic in other ways and through other platforms. You can continue to follow us on social media and support us in our individual endeavors.
Much love to you all, stay safe and we’ll holla back soon
✌🏾
