🇺🇸 America at 250 — 1776–2026
Before the flag. Before the Constitution. Before 1776.
They were already here.

My mom grew up finding arrowheads in Pennsylvania fields with her grandfather. That quiet respect for the first Americans was passed down to me.

This statue stands at Top of the Rock in the Ozarks — part of a breathtaking preserve dedicated to honoring the land and the people who first called it home. Nearby, the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum holds one of the largest private collections of Native American artifacts in the country, developed in partnership with tribal leaders from across America.

I’ve always felt a deep respect for the first Americans. As a kid, I read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and it never left me. These were brilliant, brave, deeply spiritual people who loved this land in ways we’re still learning from.

When we celebrate 250 years of America, we’re really celebrating something much older. A land that held human stories for thousands of years before anyone declared independence.

America at 250 means honoring the whole story. Every chapter. Every people.

🇺🇸 America at 250 — 1776–2026
163 years ago today — July 1, 1863 — the Battle of Gettysburg began.

Three days. Three of the bloodiest days America has ever known. More than 50,000 casualties on those Pennsylvania fields.

I took this photograph on a horseback tour across the Gettysburg battlefield. I’ve walked Gettysburg before — but the horseback ride is different. You see the land the way the generals saw it. You move slowly across the rises and hollows. You pass the farmhouses still standing — homes where families lived while the war came right through their front yards. You feel the scale of it in a way walking can’t give you.

But it was the end of the ride I’ll never forget.

As we headed back, our tour guide began to recite the Gettysburg Address. Just his voice, our horses walking, the fields all around us.

“Four score and seven years ago...”

I felt the goosebumps rise. Tears were running down my face. My dear friend Yvonne was riding beside me — we glanced at each other through the tears and just knew.

Then I looked around.

Every single person on that ride was wiping their eyes. Big, strong men included. Somebody said “allergies” — and someone else said “yeah, allergies, me too” — and we all laughed a little through the tears. But we knew. We all knew.

Lincoln spoke there for just over two minutes, four months after the battle. He said the world would little note nor long remember what was said there — but never forget what they did there.

He was half right. We remember his words. But we remember their sacrifice more.
America at 250 wouldn’t exist without July 1–3, 1863. The Union held. The country held. And every generation since has been given the chance to become what those men died believing we could be.

If you can ever get to Gettysburg — go. Walk it. Or better, ride it. Some ground is holy.

🇺🇸 America at 250 — 1776–2026

Before the interstates. Before GPS. Before you could ask your phone which way to go.
There was Route 66.

This old gas station in Cuba, Missouri has been sitting right here on the Mother Road for decades — patient, weathered, and absolutely full of stories. Cuba is one of my favorite little towns on 66. The murals alone are worth the drive.

Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 — just 150 years after America declared independence. It connected Chicago to Santa Monica and gave a whole generation of Americans the freedom to go — to see their own country, to start over, to chase something just over the next hill.
That spirit is still alive on this road. You just have to slow down enough to feel it.

🇺🇸 Happy Flag Day

On June 14, 1777 — just one year after the Declaration of Independence — the Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution establishing the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

249 years later it’s still flying.
This flag has flown over battlefields and courthouses, over Ellis Island as millions arrived with nothing but hope, over small towns and great cities, over moments of triumph and moments of grief.

It has meant different things to different people at different times. But it has kept flying.
That’s America. Still flying. Still becoming. Still worth believing in.

⚓ America at 250 - There’s something deeply peaceful about the Mississippi River at dusk.

These barges were tied up along the Illinois shore for the night when my sister and I drove the Great River Road north from Alton toward Pere Marquette State Park.

The river has been the heartbeat of this country since before it was a country. Lewis and Clark followed it west. Mark Twain wrote about it. Millions of tons of commerce still travel it every year.

It just keeps moving. South. Always south.

This weekend is my first time picking up my brushes again! 🎨💕
After dealing with hand tremors from chemo and morphine, I finally have steady hands and I’m so excited to be painting again.
This sweet girl Hailey was often my little artist painting buddy and she always inspired me. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. Everything else is going great — I’m just happy to be creating again.
Art really is the best therapy ✨

This highway, this light… it’s just a reminder that you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to keep going in the direction that feels true to you.

A perfect day in Kimmswick, MO with my sister Cathy ☀️

First stop: the NEW home of Crabby Sandy’s Emporium on Front Street. 🦀 This shop is all about supporting local artists, and the owner is a friend of Cathy’s – everyone is so excited! Swipe to see a few of the amazing items they have. 👉

But here’s something you need to know before you drive through town… 🚗⚠️
Visitors (mostly women, sometimes with kids) walk right in the middle of the street. Not on the sidewalk. They chat, they stop, they have full conversations in the road. And they will NOT move for cars. I’m not kidding. Drive slow and keep your eyes open. 😅

That said, Kimmswick is charming. Old homes, Mississippi River views, locally-owned restaurants with incredible food. You’ve heard of the Blue Owl (yes, their pies are legendary), but every place here is good – some even have live music.

Today was sunny, mild breeze, pure magic. Go explore. And definitely hit up Crabby Sandy’s first!
