🏛️ Port St. Lucie City Council voted 4 to 1 Monday night to send the full Waste Pro settlement back to residents as a credit on the property tax bill.

Here is the breakdown. Homeowners with the same property since 2022 get $364. Properties that changed hands get $64. New properties added between 2023 and 2026 also get $64. A 180-day claims process covers residents who sold one PSL home and bought another, allowing them to claim the remaining $300 credit.

Vice Mayor Caraballo was the lone no vote. She wanted checks.

🗑️WASTE PRO SETTLEMENT: A Port St. Lucie council member asked city staff Monday night why the $24 million Waste Pro settlement was not used to fund twice a week garbage pickup instead of refunds. Staff explained that twice a week pickup would create a permanent ongoing cost to residents once the settlement money ran out. The council and staff agreed that returning the money directly to residents was the most fiscally responsible decision. Twice a week pickup is also currently tied to a separate ballot question voters will decide later this year.

🧠 WASTE PRO SETTLEMENT: Port St. Lucie voted 4-1 Monday night on how to return $24 million won from a lawsuit against former trash contractor Waste Pro. The city sued after residents experienced weeks of missed garbage pickup. The full $24 million will be returned to eligible homeowners as a credit on their property tax bill. Residents who owned their home during the 2021-2022 service disruption and still own it today will receive the largest credit at $364. Newer property owners receive a smaller credit. One council member pushed for physical checks instead but the motion failed.
