The Misery Index is an attempt to quantify the level of consumer financial pain in the economy. It is calculated by combining the Consumer Price Index (CPI) year over year figure and the unemployment rate. The recently reported June CPI Y/Y figure is 3.0% and the June unemployment rate is 3.6% making a Misery Index reading of 6.6%.

As seen in the chart below, the Misery Index is still elevated from prepandemic levels but has come down significantly from the recent highs.
