Speeding is the number one contributing factor in traffic crashes in Texas. Last year, there were nearly 160,000 speed-related crashes in our state, and 1,467 people were killed and 5,921 people were seriously injured as a result.
To remind motorists that driving too fast can be dangerous and expensive, TxDOT is partnering with law enforcement agencies across the state on Operation Slowdown, a high visibility speed limit enforcement period. From Friday, July 18 through Aug. 3, officers will focus extra attention on motorists driving too fast to remind them that you make a choice when you speed. During this two-week period, officers across the Lone Star State will write tickets and spend extra time driving the roads to remind motorists what a safe speed looks like.
Speeding increases the distance you'll need to stop to avoid a crash and increases the risk that a crash will result in severe injuries or death. When you speed, you can also face an expensive fine, court costs, and higher insurance premiums.
Drivers should follow these tips to stay safe and avoid a ticket:
β’ Match your speed to road conditions.
β’ Slow down and allow for more distance to stop when traffic is heavy, roads are slick or road construction is ahead.
β’ Watch for road signs alerting you of reduced speed limits.
β’ Remember that traffic fines double if you speed in a school zone or a work zone when workers are present.
