My team and I spent the better part of this week helping a distraught client navigate the fallout from social media being used as a weapon.

A disgruntled former employee? An unhappy customer? Whoever was behind it, a paid, boosted post filled with false claims and manipulated photography appeared on a bogus TikTok account and quickly gained momentum.

To restaurateurs: PR 101 - DO NOT ENGAGE. As difficult as it may be, sometimes the best response is no response. Don’t give the post more oxygen, and don’t allow yourself to become part of the spectacle.

To the person behind it: What did this accomplish? Did the potential of damaging a business, its reputation, and the livelihoods of the people who work there make you feel better? You did not succeed, so you totally wasted your time and money.

To those who piled on, commented, and shared without knowing whether any of it was true: Think before you post. Think before you share. There are real people and real businesses on the other side of the screen.

Social media can inform. It can connect. It can build communities and businesses. It should never be used as a weapon, and review platforms should never become your emotional outlet.

Use social media responsibly.
