The Shetland hen breed has a very interesting background…

The Shetland hen is a rare landrace breed from the Shetland Isles of Scotland, whose history is linked to Spanish galleons that may have wrecked on the islands approximately 430 years ago, bringing South American chickens with them. These birds interbred with local Scottish chickens, creating a cold-hardy breed with a characteristic feather tuft on its head called a "tapp," which is why they are often called "Tappit Shetland Hens". The breed nearly went extinct by the 1970s but was saved and is now being preserved by breeders.

Surviving hens from the shipwreck were originally found on Foula, a remote western isle, and were later acquired by the Isbister family to start a breeding program.

Happy Tuesday! 😃 What a Blessing this weather is giving us. ☀️
And so are Our Black Copper Marans grow-outs, they are truly a marvel!
They are absolutely stunning!
They are 5/6 months old currently.
We are hoping for even more breathtakingly darker eggs from these pullets than what they were hatched out of.
In any case they are definitely beauties to behold!
**They are a gorgeous black with lots of sheen ~ the lighing in these pictures does not do them justice.
