This is early studies, which contradicts the original thinking that drinking lightly can be helpful. Those studies focused on cardiovascular effects and also the social effects of drinking.

The latest study shows how much alcohol is linked to a higher risk of developing certain cancers

It's not a gateway drug... but it's a gateway habit. While it seems healthier than smoking - we're quickly finding out that it is not without issues. I think this will prove to be the biggest issue.

The study doesn't prove that electronic ci******es are a "gateway drug" but some doctors say it bolsters arguments that the devices should be strictly regulated as proposed by the Food and Drug Administration. Despite those limitations, the study "is the strongest evidence to date that e-ci******es…

Amazing stuff. One of the major issues with compliance is that it's honestly a pain in the honest to get yourself to go to a pharmacy and wait in line. Having medications delivered to you directly should reduce that barrier.

WISE, Va. — The first Federal Aviation Administration-approved drone delivery of medical supplies brought asthma, high blood pressure and diabetes medications to sick patients at a sprawling rural health clinic in Virginia on Friday.

Your spit may be more valuable than you think. Apparently, levels of 6 different chemicals in your saliva may be related to development of Alzheimer's later on in life. My take is always - that's great... but we really need to find a cure. It is devastating to find out you have Alzheimer's early in life - unless there's something you can do about it.

Researchers are working on new tests to help predict Alzheimer's disease years before people ever get symptoms, both to help them plan for the inevitable but also in the hope that earlier treatment will be more effective.

Doesn't matter if you're rockin' the beer belly or if you've got the skinny jeans friendly shape - high blood pressure effects you equally. Previous studies had said that high blood pressure had hazardous effects (strokes and heart attacks) mainly for normal BMI (body mass index) people. This one clearly shows a higher risk for almost all body types.

(Reuters Health) - Though previous research has suggested high blood pressure may be more dangerous for thinner people, a new study finds the cardiovascular disease risks are similar – and high - for the lean, overweight and the obese.

Yes even 5 ci******es a day is harmful. While heavy smoking (defined as >1 pack per day) is decreasing, light smoking is increasing - which is surprising given the amount of clear evidence to support smoking's role in cancer and other health related issues. Lets just put it this way - everytime I operate on a smoker, even if its just a few ci******es a day, I tell them their risk of complications goes up.

But the habit isn't safe, the authors of a new study warn

Essentially - running fast is not super necessary - but not harmful. Mainly because intense runners often try to stick to healthier lifestyles. A great analysis by 538 - which I am beginning to respect more and more.

There was a time when the optimal exercise speed was however fast you had to run to get away from a saber-tooth tiger. Even today, in much of the developing world, people exercise through activitie…

Basically, if you sit in one place and look at facebook, instagram, snapchat or twitter all the time - you may be depressed. People without depression tend to be more productive and mobile. Thus watching the movement and use of the phone is a great way to maybe pick up warning signs of depression. It'll be interesting to see how this data is used and how interventions can be applied.

We take them to bed. We dine with them at our sides. We turn to them when we're bored, lonely, needy or procrastinating. It should come as no surprise that our smartphones -- those faithful companions we tote through life -- could detect whether depression has settled in for a stay.

320%. That's crazy. Part of the reason is that ticks' natural predators are mice. Mice have been adversely affected by deforestation. Without the presence of a predator, the population of deer ticks has surged. What used to be a northeastern US phenomena has quickly become something crossing in to the heartland.

Climate change is among the reasons blamed

At a cellular level its different. This is something that is starting to come out in medical research - that a patient's ethnicity matters. It matters in tailoring individual diagnostic algorithms and creating specific treatment regimens. As we have increased computing power, this should get easier.

The brain disease looks very different in African-Americans than it does in whites, which could affect treatment and diagnosis

As the article notes - even mycologists have a hard time determining what mushrooms are toxic or safe. In worst case scenarios, individuals can succumb to liver failure, needing a liver transplant if they are lucky.

It can be hard to tell which wild mushrooms are safe and which are toxic; a mistake can lead to liver failure and even death
