Cameroon: Tensions Rise After Biya’s Re-election Announcement

Tensions have escalated in Cameroon following the announcement of President Paul Biya’s re-election. Reports indicate that at least four people lost their lives as demonstrations broke out across parts of the country. Supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma took to the streets, disputing the election results and alleging irregularities in the October 12 polls.

As the situation unfolds, citizens and leaders alike are being urged to remain calm and prioritize dialogue over violence. Peace and unity are essential for the people of Cameroon 🇨🇲 to move forward together, regardless of political differences.

The Anti-Corruption Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala has urged the government to consider reinstating, if necessary, the death penalty for those involved in the importation of kush. In a post on his page, he emphasized that the drug is a silent killer destroying the lives of young people across the nation.

Reintroducing such a strict measure, he suggested, could serve as a powerful deterrent against drug trafficking and help safeguard the future of Sierra Leone’s youth. The call highlights the urgent need for decisive action and stronger laws to combat the growing kush crisis threatening the country’s next generation.

The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has released detailed information regarding the 220 bodies reportedly collected by the Freetown City Council (FCC) between January and October 8, 2025.

This comes in response to a letter from the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina, who demanded evidence to back the Mayor’s statement. In his letter, Lamina warned that failure to provide proof would result in “appropriate administrative and policy actions,” describing the Mayor’s claim as “serious and unverified,” with the potential to cause public panic and undermine the government’s coordinated response to the ongoing Kush crisis.

In her written reply dated October 20, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr included a detailed spreadsheet outlining the dates, locations, genders, and burial details of the deceased individuals collected by the FCC.

She further stated that the Council will cease the collection of corpses across the city and called on the Ministry to designate contact persons responsible for handling such cases moving forward.

Meanwhile, Minister Lamina’s move has sparked public criticism, with several Sierra Leoneans expressing that it reflects the government’s lack of seriousness in addressing the escalating drug problem affecting communities nationwide.
