In Remembrance of Maurice Bishop: The People’s Prime Minister
On this day in 1944, Maurice Rupert Bishop was born — a visionary, revolutionary, and Pan-Africanist who dreamed of a liberated Grenada and a united Caribbean.
Born in Aruba to Grenadian parents, Bishop rose to lead the New Jewel Movement (NJM), which overthrew the government of Prime Minister Eric Gairy on March 13, 1979, in a nearly bloodless coup. This marked the birth of the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG), with Bishop as Prime Minister.
As leader, Bishop:
Established free public healthcare and adult literacy programs
Improved workers' rights and introduced paid maternity leave for women
Fought against racism, apartheid, and imperialism
He was deeply committed to Black internationalism, frequently invoking figures like Frantz Fanon and Julius Nyerere as inspirations. His speeches resonated across the Caribbean and with Black communities in the U.S., especially because Grenada was majority Black and English-speaking, making its revolution uniquely relatable to African Americans — a fact even acknowledged by U.S. intelligence at the time.
Bishop was overthrown and executed in a coup on October 19, 1983, orchestrated by a faction led by Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard. His death triggered the U.S. invasion of Grenada a week later.
🕊️ In 2009, Grenada’s international airport was officially renamed Maurice Bishop International Airport, honoring his legacy and the movement he led.
“We talk about the human rights that the majority has never been able to enjoy … The time has come for the majority of the people to begin to receive those human rights for the first time.”
Happy Birthday, Maurice Bishop.
