"Drive-in movie theaters peaked in popularity after World War II, a time of prosperity in the United States when households had both vehicles and discretionary income. Like roller-skating rinks and video-rental stores, such theaters have fallen out of favor with the public to the point where if one still operates, it’s largely as a curio. ...

photographer Steve Fitch has viewed plenty of these silent sentinels during numerous drives criss-crossing the United States, focusing on neon and painted murals that often graced the backs of the oversized screens. Images from those journeys fill his new book "The Drive-In Theater in America" (George F. Thompson Publishing), as well as the exhibition "Screen Towers" at photo-eye Gallery.

"Last night, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (BCMA) hosted a reception and talk for Professor of Art Michael Kolster’s new book titled “Mongrels of Our Making: The Plastiglomerates of Hawai’i.” The book captures the blending of human activity and the course of the Earth’s geological record through the formation of rock and plastic hybrids called plastiglomerates."

"Scott Wallace’s Central America in the Crosshairs of War; on the Road from Vietnam to Iraq is really several books at once that cohere into a magnificent whole. It is the evocative, at times nostalgic, at others harrowing, personal account of a young journalist’s coming of age during his first foreign journalism assignment, always keenly observant and thoughtful. But it also offers a carefully developed analysis of the nature of U.S. foreign policy, at least in those poorer parts of the world where it has intervened militarily or more clandestinely, or heavily supported the wars waged by its clients. Wallace has witnessed these wars both earlier and later in his life, as a citizen and journalist."
