DECLARATION OF RED FLAG/HIGH WIND TEMPORARY FIRE BAN

Pursuant to Ordinance No. 2026-001, an ordinance to restrict fires in unincorporated portions of Routt County during periods of high fire danger, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office hereby declares a Red Flag/High Wind Temporary Stage 2 Fire Restriction. This Temporary Ban is due to high danger of wildfires combined with the Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service

This declaration shall be effective at 12:00pm June 20,2026, and will remain in force until the Red Flag Warning expires. The fire restriction applies to all private and state lands outside of municipal boundaries.

STAGE 2 RESTRICTION
The following acts are prohibited on all private and state-owned lands outside of municipal boundaries. This does not affect federal lands within Routt County.
1. All open fires and campfires except petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, and heating devices that are underwriter approved. This includes the building, maintaining, attending or using any fire to burn trash, debris, fence rows, irrigation ditches or vegetation, and any campfire or warming fire.
2. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles and buildings.
3. Operating a chainsaw without a USDA or SAE approved spark arresting device (muffler) properly installed and in effective working order, and a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher of not less than eight (8) ounce capacity by weight, and one (1) round pointed shovel with an overall length of at least 36 inches. The extinguisher will be with the chainsaw operator. The shovel may be kept with the fueling supplies but readily available for quick use.
4. All internal combustion engines, including motorcycles and ATVs, must have spark-arresting devices that are properly installed and in working order.
5. Outdoor use of welding and cutting torch devices.
6. Using explosive materials: (i.e.: fireworks, blasting caps, exploding targets, tracer rounds, or any incendiary device, which may result in the ignition of flammable material.)
7. Individual agencies (such as fire protection districts or State or Federal organizations) may further restrict commercial activities not included in this Declaration such as construction, logging, or oil and gas operations.
8. Any other restriction deemed necessary to preserve health, safety, and welfare during periods of high fire danger.
9. NOTE: Any permit issued by a fire protection district or the Emergency Manager prior to this Declaration is rescinded unless resubmitted and approved by the appropriate authority as identified in paragraph 1 of the Exemptions section of this fire restriction notice, or until these restrictions are lifted by the Board, or by the Sheriff in the case of a Red Flag/High Wind Temporary Fire Ban.

EXEMPTIONS FROM STAGE 2 RESTRICTION
Limited exemptions are allowed during Stage Two Fire Restrictions but may include the following.
1. Persons with a valid written permit which specifically authorizes the prohibited act: (a) from the fire protection district chief if subject land is within a fire protection district; (b) or Emergency Operations Manager after consultation with the Sheriff if subject land is not within a fire protection district.
2. Commercially designed and enclosed cooking device located at a private residence used for cooking (charcoal, gas/propane, electric, or wood pellet).
3. Any federal, state or local officer or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an actual duty.

FINE SCHEDULE AND PENALTY ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Any person who violates this order commits a civil infraction, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished according to the following fine schedule:
First Offense Fine of $100
Second Offense Fine of $200
Third or Subsequent Offense Fine of $1,000
The penalty assessment procedure provided for in Section C.R.S. §16-2-201 may be followed by any law enforcement officer issuing a citation or making an arrest for a violation of this ordinance.
ORDERED this 19th day of June, 2026_____________________________.

Runners in Moffat and Routt counties are needed to help support the America 250 Relay. That’s a group running with the flag coast-to-coast, over 3,000 miles, day and night without stopping. They’ll go through 15 states, including Colorado this Sunday, and then arrive at the National Mall in Washington D.C. on the 4th of July.

Runners are needed to join along for the different segments through our area, starting to the west at the Moffat County border with Utah on Saturday.

They’re expected to pass through Steamboat Springs from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday. Community members, veterans, and first responders are invited to come out and cheer for the runners as they make their way through downtown.

Here’s the link to sign up: https://www.relayforamerica.org/route

Local runners are requested to join for a 12-mile segment aiming for a 9:30 pace. You can track the flag's live progress directly, and sign up, on the RelayForAmerica.org website.

News from UCHealth -- Sheri West, a patient access registration specialist at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, was honored June 18 with an Aspen Award. Presented by UCHealth, the Aspen Award recognizes non-nurse employees for outstanding work. West was nominated for the award by Angie Young, who said West is “an amazing first point of contact when coming into the hospital” and that she “always smiles and makes coming to the hospital a joy.” West has worked at YVMC for 17 years.

The Aspen Award is inspired by aspen trees, the largest living organism in Colorado. The heart-shaped leaves of an aspen tree are commonly linked to ideas of interconnectedness, renewal and the cyclical flow of life. This symbolism arises from the way aspen trees grow from a shared root system, where all the trees are interconnected as one organism. The heart shape also represents love and compassion, deepening the sense of unity.

YVMC’s first Aspen Award winner was Cody Reynen, a phlebotomist who was recognized for his patience and professionalism during an overnight shift.
