Lady Cards win 1-of-3 in Holiday Classic, Perkins makes All-Tourney team

STEELVILLE — Steelville High School’s girl’s basketball team competed in a trio of games in the 14th Annual Peoples Bank Holiday Tournament in Sullivan beginning on Dec. 15 against St. Borgia.

The Lady Cardinals fell to a dominant St. Borgia squad, but bounced back on Dec. 18 to defeat Salem. Steelville then lost to St. James in the third-place game of the tournament on Dec. 19 to take fourth place in the tournament. St. Borgia went on to win the tournament championship over Sullivan. Steelville junior Emeri Perkins was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.3 points per game.

Crowning Teen, Junior, Petite Miss Steelville

Royalty was crowned at the 11th Annual Steelville Christmas Pageant on Dec. 9, including Cora Pearl Campbell as the 2025 Teen Miss Steelville, Natalie Bannister as the 2025 Junior Miss Steelville and Ezamae Warden as the 2025 Petite Miss Steelville. The event took place at the Meramec Music Theatre, sponsored by the Steelville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Cardinals defeat Valley, Aurora, head to Park Hills Christmas Tourney

STEELVILLE — Steelville High School’s boy’s basketball team played a pair of road games on Dec. 16 and Dec. 20 against Valley and Aurora, respectively. The Cardinals won both games and are now 4-4 on the season after starting the year 1-3.

Steelville City Council discusses finances, reports, updates, meeting date changes

STEELVILLE -— Steelville City Council discussed possibly publishing business licenses and unpaid taxes in the newspaper.
Alderman Ward 2 Jason Ward was opposed to publishing unpaid personal taxes.
“I wouldn’t see an issue with business licenses because that’s business. Now people’s personal taxes, that to me is crossing the line,” Ward said. “That’s just my personal opinion.”

Here’s who has already filed for election in the Crawford County and Steelville area

Only one local entity has had people file for election.

The 911 Emergency Services Board has three running for election, one for each seat open on the board of directors. For District One, Thomas Mounce is running for reelection. District two has two seats open. William Harlan is running for reelection to the four-year term seat, and Christina Barton is filing for reelection to the one-year term seat.

Crawford County Commissioners discuss use tax possibilities

While the state already has a use tax, Steven Pilkington from the Department of Revenue suggested in an email that a local use tax should be set up in Crawford County.

During the Dec. 9 Crawford County Commission meeting, commissioners discussed the possibility of adopting a local use tax.
